A Correction on Unaccredited Credits

Re: my post regarding unaccredited two-year programs:

As I re-read my post below, I realized that y’all might think that I’m coming down on all community colleges. That couldn’t be any farther from the truth! I love community colleges. I love what they offer, I love what they do. I think they’re the backbone of our entire higher education system. It’s the trade schools, the Apex Techs of the world, that are the bane of the existence of the four-year-college admissions counselor. (Not that I’m knocking Apex Tech specifically either.)

Stony Brook gets literally hundreds of students every year from the AA and AS programs at Suffolk Community College, and almost as many from Nassau. The vast majority of those students are well-intentioned, well-thought, well-spoken students who know what they want and are well on their way there. Credit those programs (and programs like them at community colleges around the country) for doing a phenomenal job preparing students to meet their educational goals.
