An enormous thanks to former Math department chair Dr. Jim Simons and his wife Marilyn, who yesterday announced a $60 million donation to build the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics here at Stony Brook.
The gift is not only the largest gift in Stony Brook University history, but the largest single gift to any of the 64 State University of New York campuses. How about that?! It also immediately becomes the nicest building on campus.
I love new buildings… I know it’s just bricks and glass, but a new building can do a lot for a campus. The Wang Center became such a focal point for Stony Brook when it opened, and even the reconstructed Humanities Building became something of an attraction this fall. (And honestly, our Math building needs the upgrade.)
The gift also pushes the university that much closer to our $300 million capital campaign goal. Only $40 million to go!
