Did you or would you feel confident in your writing skills right out of university to be good enough in the workplace? Does your education prepare you with the analytic skills and the familiarity of the types of genres used in your profession needed to success? During one of my summer jobs after my junior year of college, I contribute blog posts like this one that talk about events that my organization has done recently. I feel confident in my writing abilities, so I was a little surprised that my manager ask me to revise it. This was due to me being unfamiliar with blogging from my university.
In a report titled “University Preparation for Workplace Writing,” Barbara Schneider and Jo-Anne Andre made a couple of factors on how well university prepares its students for workplace writing based on a study of 9 students in 3 different majors. One factor they made was that students who major in a degree that grounds theory and practical issues closely, like management, are more prepared for workplace writing than a student who is majoring in a major more ambiguous in that connection, like Communication Studies. Even though I wanted the experiment to have a larger sample size, I find the conclusions in the report favorable.
Reading this report makes me look me back at my own education in Stony Brook University. My major is Computer Science, which focuses on software development. In one of my software classes, the professor wanted teams to write professional documentation of our final project. My team decided to use a template online to write the document. We put minimal effort into it and only started writing it about a couple of hours before the whole project was due. Since the professor knew that the class would put all their energy into coding rather than the writing, our poor documentation didn’t really hurt us that bad. But it’s not a good sign when I go into the industry where writing and documentation must be spotless and not half-assed like in college.
In Stony Brook, there is only one class (CSE 300) that teaches writing in the workplace. The professor for that class wasn’t even from the computer science department, but from the Writing department. He only taught us how to write a resume, cover letter, a manual, a press release, and a literature review. The class felt more like a general writing course than a professional writing course of the industry.
I knew from my software courses that I want CSE 300 to assign some homework that deals with software documentation. Resumes and cover letters are important, but you could easily go to the Career Center and online for help with that. I’m sure everyone in that class has a resume that is generally well-done (since the class is generally for juniors and seniors). The other assignments don’t seem that important to the workplace.
This tries in to the report that concludes on how Communication studies students don’t feel satisfied that their university prepared them well for workplace writing. The professors don’t teach the specific genres hard enough with enough repetition to prepare their students. Granted, CS students don’t care much about writing, but I think this will hurt them when we get into the workforce.
Some people might say that their professors do not prepare them for the workplace writing and instead teach them how to write for the business world. They don’t realize that being creative in a business environment is a skill that is completely different from writing for personal use.
