I prefer the negative sentence because it gives me more motivation than the you-attitude sentence. Not all negative is bad. If a person keeps reading letters that repeat the you-attitude over and over again from the same writer or company, they will be numb to this style and feel like the writer doesn’t care.
Sometimes, I see no problem with the “I” sentences, which refers to the writer instead of the reader. I like it when the writer puts some of his or her feelings into their writing that personalizes them. I am happy to know that my credit card company will give me a loan or that my business partner will accept my offer. It’s true that humans look after themselves first, but people do feel gratifying to know that the person or company offering them feels pleased as well.
In a college course I have taken on global issues, I learned that Asia is more culturally driven and rules of communication is based more on relationships and trust than on norms of business and professions as in the West. So, I believe that the issue of using the you-attitude is less relevant in Asia because people there are less individual-centered and that the importance is more with the company than with the individual employees. In the West, people are more offended by a lack of focus on them as individuals because this culture values the individual more.
When it comes to writing, the writer is the one who has to put in all the hard work. They have to create a world and show it to readers. It is not a job for the faint-hearted.
