“MEET WITH AN OCEANOGRAPHER” EVENT SERIES

I initiated  “Meet with an Oceanographer” in 2016, a monthly event to bring science out of the bounds of Academia. Because more than 50% of our knowledge is acquired outside typical classroom, we recognize the importance for scientists to reach out to general public and community groups. Don’t you think that Zoos and Aquarium are the perfect places to learn about the ocean and how we can protect it?

Recently, PhD student Caroline Schwaner, recipient of the J.R. Schubel Fellowship, joined and help on this adventure.

“Meet with an Oceanographer” event takes place at the Long Island Aquarium at Riverhead, NY. The third Saturday of every month, an oceanographer from the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology and Evolution and other institutes on Long Island provides an attractive learning experience to the young and grown up public of the aquarium. We are so excited to meet you there.

VIDEO SERIES

To highlight the ecological and economical importance of shellfish in our environment and present the research developed by our team, we create a series of videos targeting school students, teachers and the general public. We are proud to announce that all the videos were created by students from Stony Brook University (School of Journalism, SoMAS…).

Through internships and with the help of our local facilities and professionals (Division of Information Technology (DoIT), Student Media Council (SMC), Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) and the professional movie maker Jeong-A Seong), students produced a series of videos on the theme “Bivalves”.

Time Lapse Video Shellfish Filtration (2019). (Click on it)
