Fit Kids for Life Program Description

Fit Kids for Life (FKFL) is a multi-disciplinary nutrition, exercise and behavior modification program that is offered to children and families of those children who are at risk for cardiovascular disease. The program is offered to children and families who are facing at least one of the following health risk factors: a) overweight or obesity, b) high cholesterol, c) hypertension (high blood pressure), or d) type 2 diabetes / metabolic syndrome. The program is directed by Peter Morelli, MD of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and Sharon Martino, PT, PhD, of Stony Brook Physical Therapy, Stony Brook University.

Dr. Peter Morelli is a pediatric cardiologist in Stony Brook, New York and is affiliated with Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital. He received his medical degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

Dr. Martino is an Associate Professor at Stony Brook University and currently teaches in the Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program at Stony Brook University.Dr. Martino received her BS in Physical Therapy from Hunter College and went on to receive her MS degree in Health Care Policy and Management with an emphasis on Education from Stony Brook University. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University, Florida, in 2010

NEXT SESSION STARTING Sept 27th 2023;  6:00-8:00 PM. ALL CLASSES HELD AT WARD MELVILLE HIGH SCHOOL, 380 Old Town Rd, SETAUKET, NY. 11733

Classes open to children ages 8-17 who are overweight/ obese or have any cardiovascular  disease risk factors. Please call 444-KIDS for further information.

 

Based upon the Expert Committee Recommendations Regarding the Prevention, Assessment, and Treatment of Child and Adolescent Overweight and Obesity (Barlow et al.,2007),  the Fit Kids for Life program addresses screening, intervention and family involvement for the treatment of childhood overweight and obesity. Treatment includes nutritional education, physical activity training, yoga and stress reduction, and behavioral modification strategies.

The  program meets twice a week for 10 weeks for a total of 20 sessions, and to date, the Fit Kids program has been offered to nearly 1500 children and their families who reside both here in Suffolk County as well as Nassau County, NY.
