Twitter is one of the fastest growing and most popular social media sites used today.  Twitter is an excellent forum to find motivation, inspiration and social commentary from today’s leading women.

The Stony Brook Women’s Leadership Network has compiled a list of politicians, scientists, comediennes and stay-at-home moms that consistently offer insight in only 140 characters.

1) Chelsea Clinton / @chelseaclinton

Daughter of Hillary & Bill Clinton, Chelsea is an active tweeter who updates followers about political issues and women’s leadership.  Chelsea currently works full time for the Clinton Foundation, which aims to bring health security, economic empowerment, leadership development and civil service to people.

2) Danielle Lee / @DNLee5

Danielle is a full-time biologist passionate about gender and racial equality as well as STEM diversity.  Danielle’s focus is urban ecology.

3) Megan Amram / @meganamram

Megan is a comedienne and writer.  Presently, Megan writes for the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation. Megan is known for her witty one-liners and comments about society and feminism as a whole.

4) Dr. Heather Williams / @alrightPET

Dr. Williams is the senior medical physicist at Manchester Hospitals in the UK.  She is passionate about celebrating women in science and began a STEM equality support group (@Science_Grrl).

5) Kelly Hoey / @jkhoey

#LADYBOSS – Kelly is the CMO at a company called Cuurio, which helps start ups brand themselves.  Kelly is passionate about women’s leadership and women holding the highest positions of leadership within their company.

6) Simone Brummelhuis / @thenextwomen

Simone is the backbone of The Next Women – a community of inventors, entrepreneurs and advisers who support the growth of female entrepreneurs.  The Next Women provides capital, resources, networks and community to these female entrepreneurs so that they succeed in their endeavors.

7) Lena Dunham / @lenadunham

Lena is most famously known for her quirky and provocative storytelling on the HBO show GIRLS.  Lena is a force for 20-something feminists and she is not afraid to speak her mind.  She mockingly tweets about double standards and motivates girls to be proud of who they are.

Roma has a fun twitter personality and her goal is to get the next generation of girls excited about a career in engineering and STEM.  She herself is an award-winning structural engineer with a passion for women’s empowerment.

Janet is the founder and former CEO of a company called 85 Broads (now Ellevate), which is a global professional women’s network.  The network holds events and workshops for women’s leadership.

10) Lara Galloway / @mombizcoach

11) Arianna Huffington / @ariannahuff

Arianna Huffington and her online newspaper The Huffington Post are household names in fast-paced and technological news reporting.  Arianna’s twitter is a balanced focus of current events and women’s leadership or empowerment themes.

Christina is a passionate scientist and leading researcher in synthetic biology and microbial ecology.  Her tweets focus on scientific themes and her commitment is contagious to other burgeoning women scientists.

Christiane is CNN’s Chief International Correspondent.  She hosts her own news show and is very involved in international politics.  Her tweets will keep you updated on international current events as well as news revolving around women’s issues.
