The Institute for Leadership Action in Higher Education sponsored by the NYC/LI Region of the ACE Women’s Network of New York inspires participants to create actionable plans that improve the likelihood of developing their full potential and achieving their most important professional career goals. Details include:
One Day Institute
Strategic planning is a key activity in higher education, used by institutions across the nation to successfully achieve change. In this unique and supportive working Institute, you will develop a one-year Individual Strategic Action Plan (ISAP) consisting of attainable action items that begin with your current position and culminate in your plan for short- or long-term career advancement. You will assess your own leadership style, skills and competencies and receive guidance in setting realistic goals and objectives that will lead to change in the immediate future, or lay the foundation for long term future action. The Institute will help you assess your career road map and identify what you must do now as well as throughout the development of your ISAP.
Eight-Month, Post-Institute Online Community
Strategic planning is only successful when the action items are realistic, regularly monitored, supported and flexible in the event that unexpected changes occur. Successful change depends upon regular monitoring of the ISAP to ensure ongoing progress. The Institute provides
Monthly Online Forum with Higher Education Guest Experts
Within higher education, remaining an expert just in your “job description” does not help professionals advance their careers. Career advancement is intimately tied to remaining apace of the latest local and national higher education trends in such varied areas as academic and student affairs, enrollment management, institutional advancement, administration and finance, human resources, institutional assessment, etc. Given the importance of possessing broader “global” knowledge, participants in the Institute will have access to administrators at all levels and positions across institutions in an engaging online forum where they will learn and ask questions about these conversations, how they emerge and how they leverage influence on campus.

The Institute is for women in higher education who are looking to advance in their careers presently or in the near future.

Lead Facilitator
Dr. Lisa R. Braverman is a leader and innovator in the field of higher education with a thirty-seven year career working for colleges and universities across the country. She has served at senior levels in academia as chief academic officer, associate provost and dean at major colleges and universities throughout the country. Dr. Braverman has also held top leadership posts in professional education associations, including on the Board of Directors of both the University Professional Continuing Education Association and the Association for Continuing Higher Education. She served as Chair of the UPCEA’s Leadership Commission and Past Chair of its Leadership and Strategy Network. Dr. Braverman is also certified in distance education leadership by the Online Learning Consortium and the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies. Dr. Braverman is a consultant and published author. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University and is regularly invited to speak on leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship in higher education. Throughout her career, she has provided pioneering leadership and successful program growth strategies, and has developed and mentored scores of professionals regarding their personal and professional career pathways. Her forte is transformative leadership, with strategies designed specifically for women.

| Debora Spar has been a vocal proponent of women’s education and leadership, spearheading initiatives that include the Athena Center for Leadership Studies, an interdisciplinary center devoted to the theory and practice of women’s leadership. A political scientist by training, Spar’s scholarly research focuses on issues of international political economy and her most recent book, titled Wonder Women: Sex, Power and the Quest for Perfection, was published in September 2013. Spar is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, and received her doctorate in government from Harvard. |
| Jen Lee Reeves is passionate about social media, digital literacy and advocacy. She is the social media trainer and a strategist for the AARP after 17 years in journalism. Reeves speaks on the power of social media in non-profits, business, journalism, and the higher education world. Reeves is also the founder of a special needs parenting community at Born Just Right where she shares stories and lessons as a parent of a child who was born with a physical difference. She is married with two kids and a dog. Reeves is a fan of technology, running and photography. |

There are millions of Asian Americans in the United States, and a surprisingly large number of them are named Grace Lee. In the film screening, Director Grace Lee combines quirky humor with serious discussion of how the widespread use of names like “Grace Lee” often warps popular perceptions of Asian American women in the United States.
The discussion on Asian American identity, stereotypes and women in film will be led by the Director Grace Lee, Stacey Scarpone, Executive Director of Women’s Fund of Long Island and Professor Eng Kiong Tan, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at Stony Brook University.

Are post-docs considered students for the purpose of paying (or not paying) the registration fee?

What an excellent question! As a post-doc, you are considered staff, so your fee would be $15 upon registration.

Yes, copies for purchase will be available. Dr. Spar will also be doing a signing following her talk.
Hope this event was a success! For the record, a group of graduate students, faculty, and staff organized what may have been the *first* Women’s Leadership Symposium at Stony Brook in 2002. Marcia Gillespie was the keynote speaker at the two day event, which was attended by 80 women. I co-led the steering committee – an absolute honor and great memory from my time at SBU. Hope this now becomes an annual event!
