Modern medical illustration includes images of inorganic as well as organic materials. My Independent Study involved experimental drawings of a variety of objects which have structural or textural equivalents to those more normally associated with medical subject matter. Cracks, deep miniature coves, crevices, and contrastingly smooth surfaces such as are found in seashells and Native American arrowheads can also be found in bone and cartilage; mechanical forms of a camera lens in some respects resemble skeletal structures and prosthetic devices; and reflective, refractive, obscured planes in a rectangular prism can present the artist with similar challenges to some surgical tools. In my studies, I explored color through mixed media, and experimented with a number of different colors and textures of paper.
