PhD student Adam Herrington and Prof. Reed recently published a study in JAMES (link to paper), where an idealized test case was developed to understand the response of AGCMs to near-grid-scale cloud formation, across resolutions typical of present day models. The study provides a compelling argument for resolution sensitivity in AGCMs, and puts us one step closer to the penultimate goal – developing a scale-aware closure for the equations of motion at hydrostatic scales.
