CEM group member Adam R. Herrington (https://you.stonybrook.edu/ aherrington/), as part of his work as an ASP graduate student visitor with the National Center for Atmospheric Research, have published a comprehensive study on the treatment of physical parameterizations in climate models using high-order Galerkin methods. While high-order Galerkin methods have many desirable properties that are appropriate for the next-generation of climate modeling, their unique solvers make them difficult to reconcile with the conventional physics-dynamics coupling paradigm. A finite-volume based physics grid is introduced in this study, defined in a way that is made consistent with the approximations inherent to these two fundamental (and very different) model components.
