On the Job

This is my first day in the boss seat! Ruhi  allowed me sit in the student technician chair from now on so I can tackle any issues that come my way. She will be there to assist me in whatever she can  but this is a learning experience for me.

I had my first issue of the day and it was a phone call about Mathematica. Before this phone call, I had no idea what Mathematica is about. Thankfully, I looked it up on the DoIT website and found it to be a computational software program used by engineering students, math students or anyone in the scientific/mathematic/engineering fields. The issue involved the user not being able to access the program.

The next issue was a chat about Virtual SINC Site (VSS). The user was unable to access VSS on her computer on-campus. We believed it to be a browser issue and suggested her to change her browser and it worked!

The last issue of the hour was a Print From Anywhere (PFA) issue on the Mac. A girl did not know how to print her documents from PFA on her computer. Ruhi and I tried everything we can but realized that there has been an issue with PFA and Macs. I know from my personal experience, my friend wanted to download Print from Anywhere onto her Mac but even if she downloaded the correct one. It still didn’t work. We submitted a trouble ticket to see if the issue would be addressed and we suggested an alternative way to print to the girl.

It was a long day full of problems but I learned that as a student technician, we should help as much as we can and it is okay if we do not know all the answers. However, we should use our resources as much as we can to identify and solve the issue at hand.
