Week 2 – Tours and More

February 7, 2014

It was quite an adventure trying to get to room S-5410 in the Franklin Melville Jr Memorial Library. I learned that this is the location of Client Support. Client Support focuses on helping student and faculty with software, network and limited hardware issues. More information is located on the Client Support website.14566_163178252420_359610_n

Client Support was our first destination of our walking tour of this internship and one of the most important office to know as a future senior consultant. This was my first time at Client Support and I know that now that I have been physically there. I know how to direct students and faculty there who need their expertise.

Next stop: Language Learning Research Center (LLRC).

The Language Learning Research Center was our second stop on the 5th floor. It is located at N-5004 in the Franklin Melville Jr. Memorial Library. We took a tour inside and noticed how different the layout of the center compared to all other computing centers. There are two main classrooms and a lot of computers to help students with learning new languages or improving their language skills. I thought I did not know where LLRC was but it turns out I had intermediate Chinese language learning sessions in one of the classrooms. I feel that as I connected the location of my Chinese language learning sessions and LLRC, I am able to direct students who want to take language placement exams, improve their language skills, etc.

As a lover of languages, I went onto their website and learned that the LLRC has a lot of language learning resources. I wan to use what I learned to help students who want to improve their language skills. LLRC is open to all students and faculty.

After our short tour, we had a presentation from the Career Center. It was a great reminder about what is expected of us in this internship. I know who to go to in the Career center when I have questions to ask about internships, resumes, etc. I learned a little but about the connection between internships and the career center. It is hard to explain because I have been through internships but they were under course codes such as LHW and ADV. This was my  first internship under EXT.

The Career Center is a very important place for students who wish to get a job in the “real world”. They offer resume workshops, mock interviews, career counseling and a lot more. I personally have not utilized enough of the resources the Career center has to offer however I want to be able to use more of their services this year now that I know exactly who to contact if I have questions.

Walking tours are very useful. As a peer educator, I know that learning about resources that are offered in Stony Brook University is very important because it gives you the power to help students find what they need. Every student on campus pays a technology fee when they register for classes. I feel it is important for students to know the type of resources offered on this campus by asking questions. Sadly, I feel students do not ask enough questions and expect everything to be handed to them. As a result I feel as peer educators or even student consultants, we constantly interact with students and we are able to assist our peers by picking up on small little cues to help our fellow peers to the right resources.

I am excited for future walking tours and learning more about the technological resources offered by DoIT.

Ciao!
