Week 1- A New Journey

January 31,  2014

Upon entering this internship, I had some sort of a vague idea of what to expect. When I attended the first seminar, I learned a lot more than I expected to learn. We went over more than just the syllabus but the expectations our instructors have of us.

There was too much to learn however I have summed up my impression about this program (so far) with a few words and a little extra to describe why I chose to that word:

  • Unique: This year’s cohort of 13 interns is very diverse. I learned a lot about my colleagues through the introductions they provided and I hope to work closely with them soon!
  • Challenging: Compared to most if not all the internships I have been in, this one comes off as the most challenging. The technology field is a field that continues to grow the fastest and everyone is learning something new every second.
  • Resourceful: I love learning about the resources and sharing them with everyone around campus. I do believe that students don’t take the time to learn about what this university has to offer.  But that’s okay because students who choose to be a source of resources to their peers help a lot of their friend around them as well as students and faculty that they meet.

As a New Consultant last semester, I learned a lot about Teaching, Learning, Technology (TLT) and the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). As I progress as an intern to become a Senior Consultant, I can already see myself grow more knowledgeable as to what students can benefit from the technology programs offered on campus. The one thing that will keep me on track on learning about all the resources to make myself a better consultant is through Reflective Journaling. Reflective journaling plays a huge part in this internship because we are going to be using you.stonybrook.edu to track our journey through the internship.

I am a big fan of self-reflective journaling. I believe this will help me strengthen my skills as well as my colleagues’ skills as consultants and to learn from our mistakes and move on. I have found a simple diagram that will give me sort of a basis of how I will address my journey in this internship.

I look forward to this internship and how I can help educate students and faculty on the lovely resources we offer to enhance education and increase productivity.

Cheers!
