Virtual Fieldtrips using 360 Video

Thank you for attending the 2023 CELT Annual Teaching and Learning Symposium and visiting the VR Exhibit during the Lunch: Food for Thought session.

During the Summer of 2020, I used a Garmin VIRB 360 camera to help Dr. Darcy Lonsdale at SoMAS film a virtual field trip to the Rocky Intertidal Zone at Crane Neck Point near Flax Pond, directly north of Stony Brook University on Long Island Sound. The video was created to provide an experience for students who, at the time, were unable to visit the location due to COVID restrictions. In the YouTube video, you can use the controls or your mouse to pan around and look at various parts of the scene.

As you can see in the 360 video, I am filming with another camera, and that video is NOT a 360 film. Using traditional camera, I was able to make a longer clip that moves around to observe other things. The 360-degree camera uses two cameras that cover slightly more than 180 degrees, which can cause a strange seam at times where the videos overlap.

The Garmin Virb 360 camera has been discontinued by the manufacturer, however other 360 cameras are available in its place. The Garmin Virb 360 was useful because it is waterproof up to 30 feet without an external case.

Other 360-degree videos created with this camera are available on this SoMAS YouTube channel playlist.
