Concha de Albornoz: desterrada y descorporeizada.

Tratar de saber quién fue Concha de Albornoz se revela como tarea más propia de detectives que de investigadores. Rastrear las huellas de una intelectual sin textos supone imaginar nuevos modos de conocer que van más allá de la “literatura” strictu sensu, por lo que hay que buscar hechos, testimonios, para poder reconstruirla. Y no es que se trate de una escapista, sino que el tiempo parece haber escondido su rastro. No hay constancia de que ella quisiera borrar las marcas de su existencia, pero tampoco de que quisiera, de manera consciente, dejar su impronta en la historia.

No fueron pocos los intelectuales que la tuvieron en cuenta de una u otra manera en sus obras: en ella está inspirado el personaje de Magda en la novela Tobeyo o del amor, de Juan Gil-Albert; a ella le dedica Máximo J. Kahn su libro Apocalipsis Hispánica; a ella están dedicados algunos de los poemas de Miguel Hernández, Lezama Lima y Concha Méndez; y será nombre recurrente en las cartas de Luis Cernuda, Rosa Chacel, Ramón Gaya, María Zambrano… Está claro que formó parte activa del grupo de intelectuales que, durante su juventud, experimentaron la Segunda República española y que, después de estallar la guerra civil, sufrieron el exilio. Y si unimos todas las piezas de ese amplio y desordenado rompecabezas, podremos reconstruir quién fue Concha de Albornoz y qué papel desempeñó en la historia de la intelectualidad española de la primera mitad del siglo XX.

Hija de Álvaro de Albornoz, escritor y uno de los políticos más importantes de la Segunda República en España, fue compañera de estudios de Rosa Chacel en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, y se educó en la Institución Libre de Enseñanza. En Madrid, figuró como una de las integrantes de los círculos intelectuales de Madrid, junto con Rosa Chacel, Ernestina de Champourcin, Mª Teresa León, Maruja Mallo, Concha Méndez, María Zambrano, Pilar de Zubiaurre… Por lo tanto, podemos suponer que, al igual que el resto de los escritores y artistas de su generación, encontró en el filósofo José Ortega y Gasset a un maestro. A causa de la guerra civil, en la disyuntiva entre quedarse en España u optar por el exilio, escogió el segundo. A partir de ese momento, formaría parte de la red de intelectuales españoles transterrados. A pesar de algunas visitas fugaces, nunca volvió a establecer su residencia en España, quizá porque, como le confesaría a Rosa Chacel en una de sus cartas, nunca sintió la necesidad de regresar, pues la España que ella vivió no la iba a encontrar después y, además, esa España formaba parte activa de su memoria. Estando en México escribió: “reo que en el fondo, sigo en la Plaza del Progreso y en el Paseo de la Castellana, sin dejar de estar aquí al mismo tiempo. Pero no hay superposición ni revoltijo en mis recuerdos” (107).

Gil-Albert en Viscontiniana la describió como una “lectora incansable y de certero juicio” (25), “era una acompañante excepcional, penetraba a las gentes y las valoraba por sus características […]. Aparte de esto, escuchaba, sabía escuchar, le interesaba oír al otro, propio o ajeno” (Gil-Albert Memorabilia 284). Durante toda su vida, además de dar clase, ejerció de patrocinadora de muchos de sus amigos. Ella fue la que ayudó a Miguel Hernández a entrar en los círculos literarios a su llegada a Madrid; la que buscó un escondite para Giménez Caballero en los primeros días de la guerra civil; la que empujaría a Luis Cernuda a viajar a París, con ella, y, años después, le conseguiría un trabajo como profesor en el Mount Holyoke College de Massachusetts; o la que instó a Rosa Chacel a que solicitara la beca Guggenheim que le permitió trabajar en Nueva York durante dos años.

Concha de Albornoz y el exilio: desterrada

La guerra civil provocó una ruptura en los intelectuales de su generación. Unos se embarcaron en el exilio, otros permanecieron en España. Para Concha de Albornoz estas dos opciones clasificaron a los españoles en dos grupos: desterrados y desalmados. “El que quiere salvar el alma, tiene que estar dispuesto a abandonar la tierra, por eso, hoy existen los desterrados y los desalmados”[1]. Máximo J. Kahn afirma que la primera exigencia del “instinto español” es “la salvación de la esencia humana” (51), que es más bien la supervivencia de su propio ser. Por tanto, tras el conflicto de 1936, los intelectuales que querían seguir siéndolo, aquellos que no estaban dispuestos a claudicar ante el retroceso que supuso la victoria del bando nacional, prefirieron abandonar su tierra en lugar de ceder su alma, su ser. Concha de Albornoz y su grupo de amigos escogieron el destierro que, al principio, creyeron que sería “un paréntesis, una sala de espera” (Gil-Albert Memorabilia285), pero que más tarde se revelaría más prolongado que efímero.

“[C]omo españolísima que era”, tuvo que convertirse en “emigrada forzosa” (Gil-Albert Viscontiniana40) porque esa era la única posibilidad que tuvo de conservar su ser, su autenticidad. Y es que, aun desterrada, al igual que Rosa Chacel o María Zambrano, “Concha representa, donde esté, lo español; no por esto o por aquello, sino, simplemente, por el modo de ser y de estar” (Gil-Albert Memorabilia285). Su labor como intelectual, como promotora de sus amigos y como “lectora incansable” solo podía subsistir en un país distinto al suyo, que con la guerra había retrocedido varios siglos.

Concha de Albornoz y el feminismo: descorporeizada

Pero si su exilio la convierte en una desterrada para quien mantener su alma, su esencia, es más importante que permanecer en su patria, su feminismo hará de ella una mujer descorporeizada.

Si nos acercamos a la literatura sobre mujeres intelectuales de siglos anteriores, podremos comprobar fácilmente que uno de los principales reproches que se les hacía era que parecían varoniles. No en vano, algunas de ellas se vieron obligadas incluso a disfrazarse de hombres para poder acceder a las universidades o bibliotecas, o a firmar sus obras con un pseudónimo masculino o utilizando el nombre de sus maridos. Durante los primeros años del siglo XX, las mujeres dedicadas a las letras seguían siendo consideradas “varoniles” y la mayoría de los hombres, como afirmaba Ortega y Gasset, sentía “un poco de repugnancia por la mujer talentuda” (Castillo Martín 293). Por tanto, para ellas surge entonces la disquisición de si renunciar a sus intereses artísticos e intelectuales para seguir siendo consideradas “mujeres”, u obviar esas consideraciones y cumplir su destino vital por encima de todo.

El caso de Concha de Albornoz parece claro. Tras un breve matrimonio con el político Ángel Segovia, su vida toma el camino que parece corresponderle, la soltería. Sobre su marido, Magda[2]escribe que “decía querer[la], pero al modo ibérico, encerrado en una inflexibilidad que hubiera requerido, por [su] parte [de ella], para hacerla llevadera, lo que no había en [ella], una postración de amante. […] La sujeción que se [le] ofrecía careció, para [ella], de aliciente y constituía, por tanto, más bien una amenaza que un refugio” (36). Concha de Albornoz necesitaba su libertad, aunque eso significara perder su cuerpo, su “femineidad”. Por eso, cuando Gil-Albert la describe en su Memorabilia, dice de ella que

no tenía el porte materno; sí la estatura y los rasgos de Albornoz, herencia que no podía hacer de ella una mujer bonita […]. Su aspecto, netamente intelectual, estaba dosificado, casi en partes iguales, con su inclinación natural a la elegancia que se manifestaba en cualquiera de sus particularidades. No es que fuera una mujer a la moda, nada más lejos de eso, tenía una manera peculiar de vestirse, y sus tailleurs […], su muestrario de blusas exquisitas […], sus portamonedas, sus guantes, sus zapatos […], la acreditaban, aunque se trate de un término aplicado con exclusividad al varón, de dandy. Porque parecía desprenderse de todo ello un sentido distinto al que le hace a la mujer engalanarse para gustar. (283)

Como la mayoría de sus compañeras de generación, tuvo que enfrentarse a una sociedad para la que ser mujer e intelectual suponía una pérdida de la femineidad. Sin embargo, la cesión que debía hacer suponía dejar de ser, por lo que, de nuevo, antes de formar parte del grupo de desalmados, prefirió la descorporeidad.
