February 21, 2026 — Making fish with fingers
Dr. Caroline Schwaner, Rutgers University
Did you know that our limbs evolved from fins? Come by and learn about ancient fish, how our limbs evolved from fins, and how we are using transgenic fish species to test our hypotheses and grow fish with fingers! We will have fish skeletons, interactive models, and hopefully live specimens!

PhD- Stony Brook
What is your area of research?
The genetic mechanisms behind the fin to limb transition
Who or what inspired you to become involved in marine science?
Growing up in Florida and fishing, diving, going to the beach
What qualities do you think are important in order to become a scientist?
Perseverance, passion, curiosity
Why is your research topic important?
To understand congenital limb malformations and skeletal diseases
What will you be bringing with you to the “meet with an Oceanographer” day?
Fish! Skeletal preps and maybe live fish
What is the best advice you have for people interested in becoming involved in your field of research or in marine sciences?
Get research experience- reach out to labs and see if they need volunteers
