Project 4: Narrative – Unravelling

For our storytelling and narrative project, I was inspired by the genre of portrait photography. My main purpose was to portray a timeline of a human unravelling. Similarly to a unfolding flower, I focused on capturing the beginning stages of human-flowering. Beginning with a tightly closed fetal-like position and working towards a crawl– a sudden attempt to stand–followed by simply kneeling. This kneeling gesture is what I view as an attempt to submit to one’s environment/circumstances. Often times in life, we feel as though we are ready to walk, run, or sprint into a situation that we deem good. However, when we face a setback or rejection, we often feel a sense of disappointment within ourselves. That is why I chose to end the series with a contented-kneeling pose. The face/head is tilted up towards God with thankfulness. It is a portrayal of contentment with where I am currently in the progress of life and wellness. Kneeling also represents a sense gratefulness–to be still and absorb life and its fleeting moments–and as David wrote in the Psalm 46:10 “to be still and know that I am God.”
