Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture (Full with Cannons)

——— Historical background: Napoleon’s invasion of Russia

Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer whose works included symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, chamber music, and a choral setting of the Russian Orthodox Divine Liturgy. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, which he bolstered with appearances as a guest conductor later in his career in Europe and the United States.

The Year 1812, festival overture in E♭ major, Op. 49, popularly known as the 1812 Overture, is an overture written in 1880 by Russian composer Tchaikovsky to commemorate Russia’s defense of its motherland against Napoleon in 1812.

The music can be interpreted as a fairly literal depiction of the campaign: in June 1812, the previously undefeated French Allied Army of over half a million battle-hardened soldiers and almost 1,200 state-of-the-art guns (cannons, artillery pieces) crossed the Niemen River into Lithuania on its way to Moscow. The Holy Synod, aware that the Russian Imperial Army could field a force only a fraction of this size, inexperienced and poorly equipped, called on the people to pray for deliverance and peace. So, the background story of this song is about a battle. In addition, the composition of this song is three parts: Historical background, Anachronism of nationalist motifs and Commission.

When I am listening to this song, I really appreciate the melody of it. For example, at the beginning, the melody is slow and contains a little sadness; at the middle, it becomes a little cheerful and at the end it is very fast and loud. Tchaikovsky wrote this song in order to memorise the Russian battle which is to defeat Napoleon. In this song, the composer wants to express a very significant moment of the history and the precious spirit of the soldiers.

In conclusion, i think we can clearly understand the plot of this song. First, the Russian people was suffering from terrible war and many people lost their lives. Second, the war between France and Russia is very competitive. Third, the Russian people celebrate their victory and they are very excited.

You Belong With Me – Taylor Swift

“You Belong with Me” is a country pop song performed by American recording artist Taylor Swift. It is one of my favourite songs not only because of its moving melody, but also it’s romantic love story. Taylor Swift is a famous singer who has very sweet voice and pretty face and she acts two different character in this song. This song describes a love story between a handsome boy and an ordinary girl with a length of three minutes and 52 seconds. The song’s accompanying music video was directed by Roman White. The video featured Swift portraying two characters, a nerd (the protagonist and narrator) and a popular girl (the antagonist and girlfriend), while American actor Lucas Till portrayed the male lead.

The background of this story begins with a very handsome boy and a common girl who lives opposite the window. When the boy is having a phone call with his girlfriend with a bad mood, the girl write words on a board to concern about his situation and encourage him. The boy has a very pretty girlfriend who wears short shirt and very sexy, but she is faithless and unreliable. Next day, they talk together happily, but when the boy’s girlfriend arrives, the girl have to let him go. The boy actually be attracted by her energetic and shiny and the girl also finds herself love him very much. When the school has a sports competition, the girl comes to encourage the boy and the boy wins at last. The boy was happy to share the good news with her girlfriend, but he finds that his girlfriend falling in love with another cute boy. The boy feels so upset and sorrowful. Finally, the school has a big party one day and the boy invites the girl to attend. Then the girl put off her sports clothes and then dressed herself into a very pretty princess. When she arrives the party, all the people fix their eyes on her because she is the shiniest star. The boy is deeply attracted by her and they kiss and be together.

This story is really nice because it is very real and it tells people even ordinary people will receive a fantastic love if they never give up. Taylor Swift is a really smart girl because she acts two total different girls and expresses their personality very specifically. Actually, this song has a happy melody with a little sadness at the beginning. What makes me most impressive is this love story because it propagandises a very positive idea to all the people who is searching the love. To be strive for what you really want, do not give up anyone who you love and their will be miracles after your efforts. It is a great song with happy melody, which can express a positive idea to young people.

In conclusion, what makes a song so attractive and unforgettable is not only because of it’s melody, but also it’s background story. I hope you like this song after you read my introduction.

Reflection to Alice’s Restaurant – Original 1967 Recording

“Alice’s Restaurant Massacree”, commonly known as “Alice’s Restaurant”, is a musical monologue by singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie, released on his 1967 debut album Alice’s Restaurant. The song is one of Guthrie’s most prominent works, based on a true incident from his life that began on Thanksgiving Day 1965, and which inspired a 1969 movie of the same name. Apart from the chorus which begins and ends it, the “song” is in fact a spoken monologue, with ragtime guitar backing. ” When i first saw this video, i have a very deep impression on its image and the background music. This song lats for almost 18 minutes, which is the longest song i have ever listened before. When i am listening to this beautiful song, i enjoy the melody and the voice of the singer, but i still very curious about the story of this song.

Later, i search for the related information of this song on official website. The story is almost described like that: restaurant-owner Alice Brock, who in 1964 used $2,000 supplied by her mother to purchase a deconsecrated church in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where Alice and her husband Ray would live. It was here rather than at the restaurant—which came later—where the song’s Thanksgiving dinners were actually held. In this story, there is a true incident about Guthrie, that Guthrie tells the story of the littering incident, which proves significant enough a criminal offense that it could bar him from military service. The sentence “Shrink, you can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant,” is at the end part of the song, which contains deep emotion of Guthrie.

I am really curious about every background story of the song, what make them significant is that real experience will provide singer real emotion in order not to let the song so boring and blank. The story will make the song more vivid and lively to audience.

According to the books, this song is notable as a satirical, first-person account of 1960s counterculture, in addition to being a hit song in its own right. In my opinion, i have a little personal understandings of the song’s core idea and i really like the melody of that. The long time for this song will not let people feel bored at all because when you listen to it carefully, you can feel the emotion and the real story of the singer.

Hate Reflection/ “Taxi” by Harry Chapin

Harry Chapin is a famous singer and humanist who was bored in New York. He composed many songs, such as 《Dance Band On The Titanic》、《On The Road To Kingdom Come》、《Sequel / I Finally Found It Sandy》、《America’s Least Wanted》、《Elektra / Asylum Fall 1973 Releases》and so on. I used to listening to his songs in my young age and these masterpieces left me very deep impression. I like his musical style and his emotion expressed in the songs.

“Taxi” is one of the most famous songs in his works and i think he probably expresses his hate to the fate and love. The story about this song is a tragedy of love. Harry was a taxi driver in the San Francisco. When he took a very beautiful lady who wears a blue dress in a rainy day, he recognised that this pretty lady was his first love Sue. Sue had a very familiar face and sad smile, which means her life wasn’t very happy. Because of the arrangement of fate, the reality let them  broke up and they both searched for total different dreams. Later, Sue recognised Harry as well from the reflectors of the car, they finally recognised each other. Harry said that he had already experienced very long distance and little smile, he still concerned about whether Sue was good or not. But the saddest thing is that the time flies and nothing can be changed. When they arrived at destination, Sue gave Harry 20 dollars and then walk to her home, which could’t give her happiness. After meeting with Sue, Harry drove away and he was singing on the way, he said that his dream is to receive freedom in the sky, but Sue wanted to be an actress. Now Sue is still acting that she is happy in a very big family, but himself is very happy to drive the car.

The story behinds this song is really very sad because two lovers meet in the future and they will never be together. Their total different dreams make them on different path. Life sometimes just so ridiculous and it can control many people’s fate and future. Based on Harry’s facial expression, i can not only see his hate towards the love story, but also contains much sadness and heartbroken. In conclusion, i love Harry’s songs because there are always many stories and emotions behind them.
