My name is Samantha Rossano. I am currently in my fifth year of a 5-year accelerated BE/MS program in Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University. I am interested in bioelectricity and bioimaging fields of BME. I am a Graduate student researcher at the Center for Understanding Biology using Imaging Technology (CUBIT), under the direction of Dr. Christine DeLorenzo, PhD. This lab uses Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologies to discover the neurobiology behind mental illnesses, including major depression disorder, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. I started working at CUBIT over the summer after my sophomore year and have continued my work on a number of projects during my time in the lab. Throughout my two years at CUBIT, I have gained experience with image and data processing and analysis and scientific writing. My independent research projects have included investigating alternative methods for full quantification of PET data. Normally, arterial samples are taken throughout the course of the scan to keep track of the radioactivity in circulation. These arterial samples are combined with additional information, such as the amount of radio-ligand that is injected into the subject, to form an input function. Though arterial sampling provides the most accurate information for the quantification of PET tracer binding measures, it is a very invasive procedure that requires the placement of an arterial line by a licenced physician. Additionally, processing of this data is very expensive. Thus, alternative methods, such as input functions based off of venous samples or off of a larger population of PET scans (population-based input methods), are under investigation. In addition to venous and population based input methods, I have been investigating the efficacy of Simultaneous Estimation, an algorithm that imputes an input function based on tracer information and one blood sample, for the tracer [11-C]ABP-688, which binds to the metabotropic glutamate receptor, subtype 5 (mGluR5). I have presented my findings from these studies at Women in Medicine Research Symposiums at Stony Brook Medicine, as well as the National BMES Meeting in San Antonio, TX in October 2014 and in Tampa, FL in October 2015.
In the future, I hope to attend further graduate studies in order to get my Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a related field. I would like to continue working with imaging modalities, including PET and MRI, in order to investigate biological systems.
When I am not in school or doing research, I also have a part-time job at Macy’s and enjoy reading, listening to music, and watching baseball (Go Yankees!!).
