Tidbits to Sweeten your Day!
By Michaela Steil
October 14th may have been National Dessert Day, but October is also National Dessert Month, so why limit yourself to one day? Just in case you need some inspiration, here are some fun facts and history tidbits to sweeten your day!
- German Chocolate Cake was originally called German’s Chocolate Cake because of it was created by Samuel German, not because it was from Germany. The cake was actually created in Texas.
- The creation of Chocolate Chip Cookies was actually an accident. The baker, Ruth Wakefield, ended up serving the cookies to her patrons at the Toll House Inn where she worked, and eventually gained notoriety for them. She used Nestle chocolate and eventually sold her recipe to the brand. The Inn burned down in 1984.
- Because Wakefield created the chocolate “chips” herself, the actual chocolate chip we know today was not created until after the Chocolate Chip Cookie gained popularity.
- Croissants aren’t French, they were created in Vienna, Austria.
- S’mores were invented by girl scouts.
- Fudge is considered the most popular dessert in America, followed by chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies.
- Aztecs were unable to grow their own cocoa, so it was a sought after trade item.
- Regions that were able to grow cocoa were able to use it to pay taxes.
- Pound Cake got its name since the original recipe called for a pound of each ingredient: butter, eggs, flour, and sugar.
And if sweet foods aren’t your thing, a dessert doesn’t necessarily have to be sweet. In parts of Europe, cappuccinos are considered a vital part of the final meal course. Really what I’m saying is indulge. It’s midterms, the weather is getting dreary, and it’s dessert month. What other excuses do you need?
