A mixed-race Asian American refers to an individual with a parent that is Asian and another parent that is non-Asian. To begin studying mixed-race Asian Americans, you have to first start with the history of Asian Americans. America has had a long history of Asian discrimination, as early as the 1850s and 1860s. During this time, Chinese immigrants came and settled on the West Coast to work in gold mines in railroads. There was strong opposition: violence, riots, and physical attacks against them. It was the beginning of the Anti-Chinese sentiment, and it has manifested to affect the lives of immigrants from other Asian countries.
