Get Involved in Research

Interested in joining the lab as an M.A. student?

Find out more about the SBU M.A. in general psychology here. In addition to coursework, M.A. students have the opportunity to conduct mentored research with faculty in SBU Psychology and Psychiatry departments. Our recent lab graduate from the M.A. program, Alexa Allan, was selected as a top poster submission at the 2018 New York City Epidemiological Forum and recently accepted a position as research coordinator on a large multi-site NIH-funded study at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Scott may review M.A. applicants to join the lab in Summer 2024.

Interested in joining the lab as a Ph.D. student?

Find out more about the SBU Social/Health Ph.D. here. Depending on area of interest, Ph.D. students conduct mentored research on lab projects involving cumulative and daily stress, health disparities, cancer survivorship, personality, and cognitive decline. Within these broad topics, Ph.D. students develop expertise in specific topic areas and lead new data collection and secondary analysis projects.  Dr. Scott is not reviewing Ph.D. applicants to join the lab in Fall 2024, However our colleagues in Social/Health are recruiting new PhD students for Fall 2024 – please check out the Social/Health area website to learn more about the other exciting research conducted here at Stony Brook.

Participate in Research

We are not presently recruiting participants for our studies, but check back here for news of upcoming opportunities. In the meantime, you can register with ResearchMatch to create a profile and be connected with researchers nationwide.

Want to contribute to research as a participant in a national longitudinal study? The National Institutes of Health (which funds much of the psychological and health research conducted here at Stony Brook and in the U.S. and is supported by tax dollars) has launched a new research program in order to rapidly advance science but also avoid some of the sample selection issues which have limited some prior research. Here is information from NIH about the program:

The All of Us Research Program, will begin national enrollment, inviting people ages 18 and older, regardless of health status, to join this momentous e!ort to advance individualized prevention, treatment, and care for people of all backgrounds. Part of the National Institutes of Health, All of Us is expected to be the largest and most diverse longitudinal health research program ever developed. Participants will be asked to share different types of health and lifestyle information, including through online surveys and electronic health records, which will be collected over the course of the program. Those who join will have access to study information and data about themselves, with choices about how much or little they want to receive. Data that are collected will be broadly accessible to researchers of all kinds, including citizen scientists, to support thousands of studies across a wide range of different health topics. By sharing the data, we are hoping to discover how to more precisely prevent and treat health conditions. Knowledge gained from this research could help researchers improve health for generations to come. https://www.joinallofus.org/en
