As of August 2022, my current research project involves FDG-PET imaging in the detection and monitoring of patients with major depressive disorder. To investigate the neurology of expectancy and the placebo effect, I interpret and statistically test data from FDG-PET images that were acquired in a double-blind clinical trial in patients with MDD. Expectancy was documented by providing patients with an expectancy-credibility questionnaire before active/placebo treatment. By looking at images taken before and after treatment, I can indirectly measure brain metabolism and pinpoint what brain regions may be linked to high expectancy in patients on active or placebo. As such, my goal is to establish a practical method for FDG-PET imaging in potential clinical applications related to MDD, including: detection of MDD in patients with/without treatment, monitoring MDD progression, and examining the mechanism by which the body responds to high expectancy with increased brain metabolism. I am preparing to publish my findings by Spring 2023.

Principal Investigator: Donghui Zhu, PhD

In my first year of graduate study from Fall 2021 to Spring 2022, I performed a graduate laboratory rotation at EMML. There, I prepared two comprehensive reviews of advanced biomaterials research. Leading a team of three peers, I authored the first review of 3D printed chimeric DNA biomaterials for use as potential clinical applications related to bioprinting, tissue engineering and cancer. If you are interested in reading this publication, please click the corresponding link below! My second review discusses the current usage of supplemental mineral ions across all industries including medicine, and potential applications in bone regeneration and osteoporosis treatment.
