The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University is accepting applications for an Oceanographic Equipment Technician.

The Oceanographic Equipment Technician will participate in ongoing projects in the Glider Lab under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Charles Flagg to monitor oceanographic conditions on the continental shelf and support wind farm developments.  This work will primarily involve the use of Teledyne Webb Slocum ocean gliders equipped with a range of sensors.  The gliders are deployed for several month-long cruises in the Middle Atlantic Bight each year.

Required Qualifications: (As evidenced by an attached resume)
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a scientific or technical field in hand by June 2022. Two [2] years of full time related experience in engineering or related STEM field (ie. technical work with mechanical and/or electrical operations, any scientific research, oceanographic field work, or programming work).  In lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree, four [4] additional years of full-time experience operating and maintaining instrumentation systems may be considered.  Programming experience (ie. coding and debugging programs). Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.  (***Out-of-State Applicants, see “Special Notes”).

Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a scientific or technical field in hand by June 2022. Experience operating and maintaining oceanographic equipment. Experience with autonomous underwater vehicles.  Experience working on small boats.  Programming experience in MATLAB and/or Python. Experience in downloading, processing, and quality controlling data. Experience working with large data bases, such as NETCDF, ERDDAP or similar systems.

Duties:

  • Onshore routine maintenance and deployment preparation of gliders.
  • Launching and retrieving gliders from small boats; monitoring and controlling gliders while deployed.
  • Downloading data for processing and quality control and uploading data sets into appropriate databases.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

Occasional late nights and weekends, in addition to some days on small research vessels and/or away from home.
