Stony Brook University is located on Long Island New York, about 45 miles east of New York City. The campus is accessible by car, by train from New York City (the Stony Brook stop on the Long Island Rail Road), and even by ferry (from Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, New York, which is about 3 miles from campus).
