In the blink.

The first day when I arrived in the city, it was hot. Not just hot, but like the hell below the earth decided to show its existence and teased all human beings in the city, showing them what awaits some of them in the end. There were a lot of people moving on their day to day business, who congregated in flow like the river, which was an unstoppable force to reckon with and it could be heard from miles away along with the sounds of heavy breathing, screeching, screaming and honking of the city. Add to this my poor eyesight and the constant rush to experience this life across Atlantic, as I navigated through the city, it felt overwhelming. I could not breathe and I could not see what I saw a thousand times on the screen, every time I watched the film or the video set in this place. One cannot look at and study people like I am accustomed back at home. They call it mean-mugging over here.

But what I saw was different from what I expected. I saw energy moving abruptly, in the blink of the eye. Hustle and bustle on the streets, white-collar army march, homeless sleeping on the street, casual walks of young and old families with their kids. All this was so mixed up together that I could barely distinguish people, I just saw silhouettes, set in decorations  reminiscent of buildings, recent ads, taxis, 4x4s and so on. Those silhouettes live life at the day time, flowing through the city, when at night like any other creature they come to their home to recharge their batteries while emitting their energy towards their loved ones.

Summer passed. Winter now at the doorstep, the unbearable heat was switched for a refreshing freeze. But ghosts are still here. The constant movement and rush. That feeling of change in the blink of an eye.

Intro

We see people every day. In many shapes, heights, color and so on. But we never memorise their faces and characters, unless we stop and have a close look at it. Just because we do not have enough time, or we do not make enough of it as we consider it as irrelevant waste of time.  Portrait photographers are on the other hand due to their nature of craft take time to study people. I believe the objective of the portrait photographer is to capture the story of the person, their energy and character. Making a statement that despite the fact that people compromise societies and very interconnected, people are still individuals at their core with their perception of life, ideas and ways of living.

Assignment 3.

With this assignment I needed to capture the essence of the assigned characters. Cameron enjoys flowers and colors yellow with green. Ricardo relates color to the music, where his favorite color is blue ( I assume he likes blues). At the same time, Ricardo enjoys beers and bars so it made sense to relate his portrait to that kind of activity.

Part 2: Purpose of Light

Lighters. Such small objects but have so much capacity to change and bring things in life be it satisfaction from after coffee cigarette or unintentional creation of fire hazard. Those objects are very small and  it is always easy either to lose them or to leave them in bizarre places. And based on their positions one could definitely tell what the person was doing at that moment of time. As the inspiration I as taking the works of Imogen Cunningham, who was captured by interest of the image of the eggs being placed in the basket.

Assignment 1: Day of Light

With this series I wanted to capture how the light of the day affects the location. Throughout the human history, people always were creating stories based on the observations of the surroundings. Night time was a time for wicked dreams, werewolves, vampires and other nocturnal magic, while mornings were the time of the new beginning. Therefore one could clearly establish the difference in the mood and the thoughts that people experienced, based on the time of the day. Looking at those photos of the same location in different times will help to show this kind of distinction.
