The basics

Search for courses offered at Stony Brook via the Undergraduate Catalog. In the “Course Descriptions” section, see class codes, titles, descriptions, prerequisites, SBC/DEC designations, and credits.

Please note: The course descriptions in the Undergraduate Catalog do NOT indicate WHEN a class is being offered. The Undergraduate Catalog is updated at the start of each registration cycle. Please refer to the most recent edition by following this link.

Begin by selecting “Course Descriptions” from the left side navigation menu.

Searching by department:

To look for any class within a specific department, select from the “Prefix” dropdown menu in the Course Filter.

Once a prefix has been selected, select “Filter” to narrow down the course results. A list of courses will populate based on selected filters.

Searching by specific course:

To look for a specific course, enter the course “code or number” after selecting the prefix. Select “Filter” to populate the specific course.

To learn more about the course, click on the hyperlinked title. This will expand the course to show more details.

Searching by keyword:

Searching by keyword can be useful for looking for classes with certain descriptions or indicators in the titles. It can also be used to search for SBC designators. When looking for a specific keyword or phrase, leave the “Find whole word or phrase only” box checked. Below is an example of the SBS – Social Behavioral Sciences SBC.
Please note: To confirm that a class fulfills an SBC category, open the course description and find the “SBC” section under the description.
