Black Hawk Down

The movie portrayed a strong sense of working as a team and having each others back. Throughout the movie, General Garrison keeps reminding the soldiers especially LTC Danny Mcknight that no one should be left behind. The first time he said it was to Sergeant Eversmann team, rangers chalk four, when the soldiers were ready to leave to the city for the mission, he came by to one chopper and bid the soldiers good luck. Eversmann realizes that Garrison never did that kind of a thing before.  When the first black hawk went down, Garrison from the home base instructed the soldiers to set up a perimeter to evacuate the wounded from the chopper. He did so consecutively for the two other crash sites as well. When his men were getting hit really bad, He spoke to the General of the Pakistan Military demanding help for reinforcement to get his men out of that city.

When the final  black hawk went down having pilot Michael Durant, the ground forces could not reach them due to the road blocks and heavy firing. Thats when two delta snipers, Shughart and Gordon ask permission to go down and secure the perimeter where the chopper was located, fully aware of the risk they were taking and they would lose their lives as huge crowd of angry  Somalies were coming their way.

In this movie, the soldiers would risk getting into hostile situations, situations in which med attention cannot be reached to them, just so that they could save their fellow soldiers and bring them back to home base.

There was an instance where the body of one pilot was stuck inside the chopper, situated in a hostile area where guns are fired from dusk to dawn. Yet, the soldiers did not leave the pilot there. They proceeded to dismantle the chopper to remove the pilot from within.

Another instance is when all the wounded soldiers were rounded up and loaded in the truck. LTC Danny Mcknight and the soldier driving were badly wounded so much that the soldier probably lost his eyesight and Danny got shot in the neck, yet they kept driving to get the men back to the base.

During the last scenes of the movie, due the large amounts of wounded soldiers, filling the trucks, a few soldiers, those under Sergeant Eversmann command, chose to walk it down through the gun fire.

In this movie, the unit does everything it can in its power, it even pushes its boundaries to make sure that its soldiers do not get left behind. Here, they have each others back, always on the look out for the other and they do not leave till everyone is rounded up, including the soldiers that lost their lives in the war.

a few good men

Group discipline also known as the “code red” is practiced in every unit of the army. It is the way in which soldiers are made tough and disciplined to the order given to them to protect the country. The movie demonstrates both the pros and cons of having this kind of discipline. Though not found in any book, the code red is well aware amongst the soldiers in the marine core.

The benefit of having a code red is that it helps a soldier never repeat a mistake again. It disciplines them. This is shown when Lt Daniel Kaffee, the counselor for the accused brought Cpl Jeffrey Barnes as witness. Jeffrey narrates his incident of how a code red was performed on him and it worked to his benefit. It disciplined him never to have his gun slip. This shows the benefit of having group discipline. Soldiers help their fellow soldiers toughen up by showing a little bit of harsh treatment.

However, the group discipline can go wrong in many ways, It targets the weaker soldiers of the unit, like that of William Santiago, who died cause of this treatment. Instead of having him transferred, his superiors decided to train him instead and ordered a code red which eventually led to his death. By targeting the weaker section of the unit, they should be protected by their fellow soldiers, not mistreated in the name of discipline. There are other ways in which discipline can be enforced in a unit, but by beating up and harming another human just so that he follows the code, is incorrect.

The risk or the worry when the military considers itself better than the population it serves is the training that the military uses to train it soldiers to be disciplined and tough and loyal. The training can be hazardous to the life of a weak soldier like Santiago who was desperately begging for a transfer from gitmo. In this movie, the superior Col. Nathan Jessup and Lt. Jonathan Kendrick, found it better to train Santiago than offer him a transfer. They believed that if he was transferred, he would be endangering the lives of a people he protected. They even ignored his medical records which showed symptoms of his coronary disorder and asked his fellow soldiers Dawson and Downey to perform the code red. The two soldiers just followed orders given to them by their superiors as they were disciplined in that way to do so. When Santiago Col Jessup thought it better to lie about the transfer than admit that he may be the reason for the death of Santiago.

Saving Private Ryan

This is one of the movies id watch again and again. Tom Hanks did a marvelous role as Captain John Miller in this film. The way he conducted his squad and commanded it to search for Paratrooper James Francis Ryan. The movie is set during the World War 2  where Miller and his squad are set about to find Ryan, whose three brothers had all been killed in different locations. The news about his brothers death was brought to the notice of  General George Marshall who realized that he had to send three funeral telegrams at the same time to Ryan’s Mother.

In order to alleviate the grieving woman’s sorrow, the general decides to find the fourth son and send him home immediately. Thus begins the journey where Tom Hanks (Captain Miller) and his squad set about in search of Ryan (Matt Damon). Through the journey the men in squad develop a close friendship due to the hardships they face on the way.

On finally finding Ryan, he is shocked to hear about his brothers death. But he refuses to go home with Miller and the squad. He says he intends to stay “with the only brothers [he has] left.” This shows his loyalty and devotion to his fellow soldiers fighting with him. Miller realizing Ryan made up his mind decides to stay to too, though is exasperated by Ryan’s Decision. Miller and his crew take up arms over the defense of the bridge at Ramelle ( the place where Ryan was stationed) and wait for the impending doom of the Germans trying to seize the bridge. At the end Miller and most of the crew members die and the audience are taken back to the present where Ryan, now an elderly veteran shows his tribute to Miller grave.

I think the wonderful part of the movie is it perfectly portrays the tension between following orders and self preservation. Ryan could at any time been off with  Miller and the crew and in the safe comforts of his home and mother. But he chose different. He chose that it was more worth fighting than going back and giving up. This, though angered Miller, he admired it as he says in his last breath,”James..Earn this. Earn it.” It shows that at times soldiers are thrown in situations where they have to choose between following orders and self preservation and in most cases the soldiers chose the latter. They believe that it would worth it, risking their life and that to me, is beautiful and priceless.

A Bridge too Far

The movie is about the failure of the Open Market Garden in The world War 2, where the allied forces tried to break the german lines by seizing the  several bridges in Netherlands. They did so in order to outflank the german forces and end the war before christmas. The name of the movies comes from the comment made by Lieutenant- General Frederick Browning when he speaks to Field Marshal, Bernard Montogomery, the operation architect. Before the operation, the general says,” I think we may be going a bridge too far.”

In this blog, i draw comparison on four Airborne Commanders in the film.

1.  Major- General Roy Urquhart : GOC, First British Airborne Division, Arnhem.

General Urquhart is one of the most charismatic characters in the second world war.He is shown to be a serious soldier with great warmth and charm in the film. He is seen to obey the rules given to him without showing any opposition to them. He is afraid of heights and yet he decides jump  for his country. He is helpful and does’nt mind doing the work of a sergeant. When he gets out of his hiding from the attic of one of the houses and his soldier gets shot, he refuses to leave him with the comforts of the other home until he is assured that his soldier would be okay. This shows his loyalty.

2.  General Maxwell Taylor: CO, 101st Airborne Division,

He is portrayed to be the smart one and diplomatic one. He doesnt not like the plan crafted by Montogomery, yet says nothing about it. He however talks about it to his dutch advisor and shows his uncertainaity in the plan. His is sarcastic in his talk with his soldier and the concern is clearly shown on his face.

3. General Stainslaw Sosabowski: CO, Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, Polish Armed Forces

He shows his disagreement with the plan right from the start. He is the only one that stands for what he believes and thinks that this plan is a disaster. He is brute and to the point and not afraid to voice his opinions. He even asks Browning to write a letter stating that he was forced into this if his men get massacred. He is loyal to his country

4. General James Gavin: CO, US 82nd Airborne Division

He was the first to jump. He has an athletic posture and takes his responsibility very seriously. He is intelligent, however reserved and quiet than from the rest of the commanders.

The Killer Angels

In the movie Gettysburg,  General Robert Lee and Colonel Chamberlain play a crucial role as they both have contributed greatly to the battle. Though the two fought for the same cause, Chamberlain and Lee were quite different from each other.

General Robert lee was one of the most beloved men in the movie. He is characterized as an old wise man and a brilliant commander. He fervently holds up the traditional ways of combat despite knowing that it need newer ideas. He inspires his soldiers and at times overestimate his confidence in them. He doesnt analyze things the way Chamberlain does and has a lesser experience with battle.

Chamberlain was a professor at Bowdoin College during the time of war. He left it his work and joined the army for his deep desire to serve the country and became a distinguished soldier at the end of the war. He is shown to be very educated and thoughtful. He is an idealized soldier who chose to gave up his job as a professor in order to fight for his country. Chamberlain analyses what he sees around him as has a much closer hand on experience with the battle.

Glory..

The movie is a story within a story. It is set during the civil war where Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick leads the 54th Regiment of the Volunteering Infantry: the first black regiment to be used in war. The regiment does not only fight for their country but also their respect.

The prejudice against the 54th regiment was so strong that the regiment was not allowed to fight but rather treated as slaves. They were not given uniform and proper foot wear.Colonel Robert had to fight for his soldiers and be persistent to get shoes for them.

They were even payed less wages than the the other soldiers. This enraged the black soldiers. They tore their wages up saying they’re “not going to take slave wage”. Seeing that all the soldiers tore their wages and were still ready to fight the war, Shaw tore his wage up as well. In this way he gained a lot of respect amongst his soldiers.

The regiment had to undergo a lot of obstacles to be allowed to fight in the war. However at the end, the war was worth fighting for the black. The black troops showed that they were human too and were willing to stake everything to gain their freedom and respect. The movie did not have a happy ending, however it showed the moment of glory for the black regiment.

What I want to learn in LDS 102 this semester

1. I would Like to learn how do military organizations work, the strategy and various angles they look at before tackling a problem.

2. The system of Rankings, From the highest to the Lowest and the responsibilities of each rank besides the obvious ‘protect the country and its citizens’.

3. The history of wars, the good and bad times, the battles lost and won, I want to know how they would strategize a plan before implementing an attack, and if it goes wrong how would they adapt to that situation.

4. The different Categories in a military and their functioning.

“Bradley and Patton are both considered immensely successful military leaders. The movie portrays them as immensely different. Compare and contrast and which would you rather be like?”

In the movie Patton, both Omar Bradley and George Patton played significant roles as militant leaders. They both were Bold and authoritative figures in the film, having a knack to adapt and improvise on any situation, even the toughest ones, thrown at them.

I, however see myself leaning more towards Omar Bradley, as I find his ways of dealing with situations more logical and less harsh in comparison to General Patton.

General Bradley, is more amiable and courteous, even while issuing an order he would end it with a ‘please’. He is the rock of stability and shows some emotion unlike General Patton who is more unpredictable, and at times even sarcastic and tactless.

General Bradley does not rush into things, he’s logical and takes all facts into consideration. This is unlike General Patton as he is quite unpredictable and competitive.

However though General Patton is more of the outspoken one and very direct with what he speaks. General Bradley on the other hand is more gentle and quiet.

I find most traits of Bradley in me than that of Patton except for the outspoken trait. I prefer getting all the facts straight before jumping to conclusions. I therefore would like to be like general Bradley.

Musical Reflection

My heart will go on -Celine Dion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNyKDI9pn0Q

summary- it tells a tale about how true love never dies. The song starts with the girl dreaming about the guy and the fact that even though he is’nt around his heart will live forever. The song is about Rose(from the movie titanic) love for Jack and though they are parted, she will always remember him and love him.

integration- the song has a tune of a lullaby which complements the lyrics beautifully. However thought, without the music, the lyrics itself hold impact and the depth of its meaning can be understood. The music adds the final touches. moreover its played on a violin which gives this music piece its elegance.

Back story- the violin is what gives the music its beauty. it sweeps you into this sweet embrace and its smooth flow of musical notes calms you down.

Recommendation- I do recommend this as it more of a calming music and if you are a sucker for romance, this music piece is a jackpot.

2. All about the bass- Meg Trainor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PCkvCPvDXk

Summary- the songs about feeling good about yourself and your body. Its about being positive and optimistic and in believing that you’re perfect in how you look and you do not need to change that for anybody.

Integration- the music has a happy ring to it, giving off a vibe of optimism. The music is all about being happy and has a dance tune to it.

BackStory- this song was actually dedicated to me by my sister, as i had a problem about my looks. She has always been supportive, as a matter of fact so supportive, that i now have started over eating. The song is beautiful, every girl should listen to it. It totally rocks.

Recommendation- i would recommend this cause every girl deserves to know they are beautiful no matter what. It helps every girl feel confident in her body.
