The day started with some music. I will try to always have music playing when you first walk into class. If you have specific music intro requests for when you are giving your class lesson, let me know!

We did a bunch of introductions:

Gaoqi is interested in blending art and technology and also interactive design.
Matt does programming and graphic
Justin’s background is in Music Tech
James is a musician and has experience doing home videos
Chris/Shades has a story development idea called “storyplay” has done some work in Unreal Engine
Kevin works in the Teaching and Learning Lab, has a computer science background. He wants to work in virtual reality, possibly using the Oculus Rift, and he also has a music interest.
Kate’s background is in art, animation and technology.

Danni is a photographer and photoshop artist, and is pretty fluid in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign. She is currently in a Digital Animation class, so she will be learning Blender and Maya.

Tom walked in late… so maybe he can fill us in here:

Tom has experience with music production, sound design, video editing, and graphic design.
(With the following programs: Logic Pro X, Massive Synth, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Photoshop)

A great group right?  We do have room for a few more students in the class, so I encouraged people to tell other students that might be interested.

The videos that we watched in class today included:

A general overview video:

Start here!: Overview of Pixar in a Box.

2 Videos on stroyboarding:

Then we looked at the Stony Brook University Lynda.com site:  stonybrook.edu/lynda and showed just a small part of a lesson on Unreal Engine.  http://www.lynda.com/Unreal-Engine-tutorials/Unreal-Engine-Architectural-Visualization/370011-2.html?org=stonybrook.edu  I’ll be setting up a course account on Lynda.com for everyone after add/drop period is over.

The students in the class will be tackling actually running parts of the class and creating lessons in TED Ed.  Everyone made an account and we created one test lesson each. TED Ed lessons each have a video, some assessment questions, a place to put links and dig deeper into the subject, and a discussion board.  Students will publish their lessons and we will post links to the lessons on this site.

We also agreed on a grading schema for the course as a group.

Attendance = 10
Participation (completing assignments) = 15
Lesson Presentation 1 = 20
Lesson Presentation 2 = 20
Final Project Critique = 15
Final Project Group Assessment by Peers = 20

The Final Project will be a fully rendered 3d story (either original or in the public domain) of 4-8 minutes in length.

Finally, everyone worked on creating some storyboards, while listening to The Planets by Holst.

A few people shared their storyboards afterwards, and I was pretty impressed with people’s on the spot creativity!

(If anyone wants to post examples of their storyboard  – go ahead!)

Because I know that we have a few students interested in Virtual Reality we also watched:

and we talked a little about Machinima and watched parts of

and

That was the first day of class.  I have a few things to follow up with everyone…  coming soon later today!
