Two Less Lonely People

Contents

Less or Fewer

The general rule for less versus fewer is: fewer is only to be used when discussing countable things, while less is used for singular mass nouns. For example, you can have fewer materials, dollars, cities, or cats, but less sugar, money, wealth, or love. If you can count it, go for fewer.

Air Supply’s Two Less Lonely People In the World error lies within the title.

“Two less lonely people in the world”

While it should be:

“Two fewer lonely people in the world”

Most times in grocery stores, the express aisle will say “ten items or less,” however this is blatantly incorrect. The sign should read, “ten items or fewer.”
