What Makes You Beautiful

Contents

Transitive verbs make a fundamental difference in One Direction’s breakout song.

A transitive verb is a verb that can take a direct object. In other words, it is done to someone or something.

One Direction’s, “What Makes You Beautiful”

“The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed”

The correct use of “overwhelm” is as a transitive verb and not an adjective describing a state or condition.

Something can overwhelm a person or a person may be overwhelmed by something, but it is not correct to state that someone can get into an “overwhelmed state.”

The line should be

“I am overwhelmed by the way that you flip your hair” or “the way that you flip your hair overwhelms me.”
