While, we’re not sure if Justin Bieber would be a good boyfriend, we’re sure he made a grammar mistake.
In his hit, “Boyfriend” Bieber makes his fans swoon by telling them how good of a boyfriend he would be.
However, while he does, he makes more than one grammar mistake.
Beiber sings, “If I was your boyfriend, I’d treat you good”
However, he’s singing about a reality that has is not true, he is in fact, not your boyfriend.
Therefore, it should be “were” instead of “was.” Refer back to Stefani’s Rich Girl for more in depth analysis about the difference between “were” and “was.”
Secondly, Beiber makes the mistake of saying, he would treat his new girlfriend “good.” This is improper English, he should say, “treat you well.”
Why?
Well is an adverb (and therefore modifies verbs) and “good” is an adjective (and therefore modifies nouns). So for example, one would say, “I am well,” “She swims well.,” “The boy runs well.”
Now, next time you English professor asks you how you’re doing in his class, you can confidently say, “I’m doing well.“
