In order to understand how dictation software is used by medical professionals, it is important to first explore the functions of the software. A Youtube video was observed regarding a resident physician’s experience with Dragon dictation software. He displays the multi-button microphone and remarks on how he only uses one button: the record button (IMG Resident). Upon further investigation as shown in the image on the right, the other buttons on the microphone seem to be extra features to potentially facilitate the dictation. Yet directly from the company, it is stated that the record button is the primary dictation control (Nuance PowerMic III). This video is a good representation of how simplified complex technology becomes in the hands of professionals that focus on efficiency. It is assumed that this physician has been introduced to the basic features of the equipment in his training. But at the end of the day, only one button is necessary for him to complete his task of dictation.
