Professor Hoi-Chung Leung ‘Seeing from the Brain
Professor Leung’s speech was very eye-opening. She showed us how the brain processes visual information, and the inertia of the brain may cause human beings to misidentify certain scenarios.
The most interesting thing to me is the theory behind the Illusory image. The application of illusory illusions is involved in people’s life, such as art, fashion, and architectural design. People think wearing vertical stripes will makes them look ‘thinner”, and some artists use illusory mages to make their work more visual impact. Also, people see different levels of brightness in the same situation based on visual experience. I found that in those illusions, when a subject presented in shadow, we will feel it a little brighter, while in a well-lit environment, it will be perceived as darker. This is amazing and suspenseful that the brain has completely independent functioning and thinking system, sometimes what we see does not exist, but is affected by perceptual factors such as light, shape, color, and location, without our knowledge.
The oil painting of Escaping Criticism was one of the most impressive masterpieces to me when I was studying art in the 19th century.The artist of this painting Pere Borrell del Caso was known as trompe l’oeil which is a style of optical illusion. The forced perspective and hyperrealistic details make this painting stand out among the numerous idealistic romanticism paintings. The painted boy‘s hands and right foot grasping the frame, eyes widened as if to escape from the dark world behind him. Caso’s style is quite different from other painters of his era. As the rebellious spirit of Escaping Criticism, his optical illusions challenged critics and the aesthetic authorities of the day. Caso’s paintings not only deceived our brains, but also influenced many future artists.
That is a fascinating reflection made by professor Hoi Chung.
