12 women college presidents were interviewed in order to explore their leadership self-identity:

Major themes that continually repeated were a necessary of balance, the importance of physical appearance, reflection and acknowledging the huge time commitment.

Balance:

  1. Embracing weaknesses and strengths without losing competence or credibility
  2. Understanding self-confidence and missteps are compatible
  3. Language can divide as well as unite
  4. Leadership includes loneliness and distance from subordinates as well as connection and praise
  5. Being a collaborator versus a change agent

Physical Appearance:

  1. Self-presentation as the living logo of their institution

Reflection:

  1. Use for self-renewal
  2. Engage in curiosity
  3. Alignment between identity and work

Time Commitments:

  1. “There is no life outside of a presidency.”
  2. Having to prioritize
