Hispanic Languages and Literature takes great pride in the academic achievements, dedication and community engagement of our undergraduater students. At Stony Brook University, we help them grow intellectually and explore careers, and they make the world a better place for all of us. ¡Mil gracias!
Following the recommendation of our faculty in advanced courses, we are pleased to spotlight Óscar López, an outstanding Spanish major whose insightful participation consistently enriches our class discussions. Óscar is currently enrolled in our accelerated combined BA and Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish program. He brings to Stony Brook a genuine passion for learning and teaching Spanish and Hispanic/Latino cultures, along with a contagious smile and a strong sense of community.
We asked Óscar two questions to learn more about his relationship with our program and how his experience can inspire other students considering Spanish as a Major or Minor.
HLL: Can you please tell us what you like best about our program?
Óscar: What I love most about the Spanish and Literature program is its diversity—both in the students I learn alongside and the incredible faculty who teach us. Every class is enriched by different perspectives, making discussions more meaningful and insightful. Our professors, experts from around the world, are not only knowledgeable but also deeply invested in our success. Through this program, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the richness of other Hispanic cultures besides mine (I am Salvadorian), and the role language plays in connecting communities and how diverse and rich our culture is.
HLL: What advice would you give to students considering a Major or Minor in Spanish?
Óscar: If you’re passionate about language, culture, and literature, this program is an amazing choice. It’s more than just learning Spanish—it’s about understanding the histories, identities, and voices that shape the Hispanic world. As a future teacher, I know the knowledge and experiences I’ve gained here will help me support and inspire my students. Whether your goal is teaching, research, or another field, this Major or Minor will give you valuable skills that extend far beyond the classroom, and long lasting relationships with the amazing people you going to be able to meet too.
¡Muchas gracias, querido Óscar!
