Migration Prevention

Why do young men migrate? There are several concrete answers to that question based on research and statistics.  In short, the reasons include lack of employment and education opportunities, high crime rates in their communities which place their lives at risk by gang activity, the strong desire of young men and women to reunite with family members who have already migrated and the pursuit of a better way of life.

HHH is helping address the problem by trying to create employment and educational opportunities with the agreement and commitment from beneficiaries to give back to their communities.

Working with the Ngäbe-Bugle Indians of Panama

After our initial trip to assess how we could best help the communities of the Ngäbe-Bugle indian reservation, we returned in August 2014 to conduct a workshop addressing 4 main topics of particular interest and concern:

  1. Basic first aid and CPR
  2. Assisting in natural and uncomplicated labor and delivery
  3.  Natural herbal medicine
  4. Organic agriculture

The Ngäbe-Bugle indian participants were extremely pleased and highly interested in the information and methods that Hope for a Healthier Humanity brought to their communities.  On this trip we recruited experts from Honduras, also of indigenous descent to take part in our workshop as the principal instructors in natural herbal medicine and organic agriculture.

We will augment the work already started by conducting a dental brigade in December 2014.

A new batch of Health Promoters & Community Leaders

Education is a large part of what we do with Hope for a Healthier Humanity www.hhh.us.org, we strongly believe in distinguishing ourselves by providing services to the communities that help them become independent and self sustaining.  The best tool we can provide to meet that end is education.  In July, thanks to the hard work performed by a wonderful member of our team living locally in Honduras, Carmen Rivera, we were able to supplement her education to community leaders and health promoters.  Health constitutes a balance between physical, emotional and psychological well being.  When one area lacks the person’s health declines.  We have now started to incorporate lectures on leadership, coping with stress and improving self-esteem.  In July, the community leaders presented to us in detail the tremendous work they are doing in their local communities and we could not be more proud of all their hard work and effort.

We continue our efforts to improve nutrition with a nutritional supplement and to increase protein in the diet with fish.

Natural Medicine

In some of the areas where our organization works, the communities are so poor they do not have running water, electricity, indoor bathrooms or enough money to feed the family balanced meals.  Not having enough for basic needs to sustain life such as food and water, healthcare often takes second place.  Most of the community members do not have health insurance to help them pay for visits to a clinic, consultations with physicians and certainly not to purchase medications.  Hope for a Healthier Humanity has started incorporating workshops on natural medicine where the participants learn about medicinal properties in local flowers and plants readily available in the geographic location.  With instruction led by experts in the field, the participants learn how to make tonics/syrups, ointments and tea infusions that can be used as effectively as non prescription and over-the-counter medication.

Fundraising Success

The Hope for a Healthier Humanity (HHH) sponsored dinner and fundraising event in Washington D.C. was a wonderful success.  It was a true pleasure being part of such an event where all gathered were interested in one form or another to help communities in underserved areas such as Honduras.  It was great getting together with the entire HHH team and family members to celebrate a worthwhile cause.  Pictures are coming soon so stay tuned.

My apologies

To any of you that have been following our blog and trip progress I want to apologize for not making any posts since the end of March.  The lack of posts is not due to lack of progress or work on behalf of Hope for a Healthier Humanity (HHH); it has been due to an unfortunate accident I suffered that required knee surgery.  I am back to work and we continue to move forward.  Thanks for keeping up with the ongoing projects and efforts of Hope for a Healthier Humanity.
