George Gerbner once wrote that the usual narrators are no longer sharing stories of human history and culture. Instead, these “stories” are being told by powerful media elites with capitalistic motives.
He writes:
“For the first time in human history, children are born into homes where mass-produced stories can reach them on the average more than seven hours a day. Most waking hours, and often dreams, are filled with these stories. The stories do not come from their families, schools, churches, neighborhoods, and often not even from their native counties, or in fact, from anyone with anything relevant to tell. They come from small group of distance conglomerates with something to sell” (Gerbner 3).

My only concern with his approach of discussing television is his assertiveness while criticizing the deliverance of television’s general and synthetic messages, because he does not really discuss the messages themselves. The reality of the media is that it enables mass population to retrieve the same messages that were once told by the family, the church and the school.
This “message” I’m talking about basically goes as follows: “It is important to stay in school and be faithful to your religion because if you do not do these two things than you will not have a job and then you cannot find a partner of the opposite sex to procreate with and then you are not contributing to the growth of the human race and that is the only reason why we were put on this earth!” (A little long, but you get the idea). He discusses the “cultivation” of television and its long-term effects on children who experience it for certain periods a day. However, while he addresses a loss of organic storytelling methods (home, church, school) he must recognize that many of the stories being told on the television are the same as the original stories he believes are being lost.
Because the truth is, ideology is ideology, and it is a rare occasion for them to be altered over time. The basic three in my mind are revolved around the family, the education system and religion. Now if we consider where these three take place, we have, as Gerbner discusses, the homes, the schools, and the churches. I understand his concern for the loss of the source, but are the children really losing the message?
James Carey developed the ritualistic view of communication, stating that a it is “directed not toward the extension of messages in space but toward the maintenance of society in time; not the act of imparting information but the representation of shared beliefs” (Carey xviii). In other words, communication’s purpose is not focused on the extension of information, but on the sharing of common beliefs, or as many cultural theorists call them, ideologies.
If we consider the thoughts of Carey and Gerber into a new analysis, we can conclude that the television broadcasts, along with other sources of mass communication, are not stealing the storytelling process from the families or churches, but they are in fact reiterating the importance of them. Mainstream news is written by mostly bourgeoisie Americans – white, Protestant, heterosexual men who value the family, church and education system.
While I believe extended periods of consuming television do have long-term effects on our youth, the messages they are receiving on war, drugs, homosexuality, race and more are the same ideologies they were receiving long before technology was prominent in society, before the 7 hours a day of consumption, and before there truly was a mass media. So is the television really to be held responsible for children’s views on the world, when the people writing for TV are the same ones who support these ideologies in the first place?
