U.S. Supreme Court signals more leeway for voting restrictions

In the news the voting rights act has become a pretty hot topic especially coming out of a very tumultuous election cycle! The Voting Rights act of 1965 aims to eliminate or reduce discrimination related to voter activities, but Arizona law has recently violated it as they have made a law against what critics call “ballot harvesting”. Arizona’s measures made it a crime to provide another person’s completed early ballot to election officials, with the exception of family members or caregivers. The issue is that oftentimes community activists sometimes engage in ballot collection to facilitate voting and increase voter turnout. This issue was recently brought to the supreme court and it seems that the Republican majority will state that the law is constitutional and not in violation of the voting rights act.
