Shooting Lights and Blurry Shapes

Marvin, an MBA student and Photography club president, experimented with custom bokeh shapes in his photography using the vinyl cutter.

Despite having the background of an electrical engineer (Bachelor’s Degree), Marvin always had an interest and passion for photography. His photography is something he want to experiment with, to further develop his personal style. The bokeh style comes from the Japanese word boke (ボケ), which means “blur” or “haze”, or boke-aji, the “blur quality”, as defined by Nikon. In short, it is a style that captures the primary subject in focus (clearest), but the rest behind it is blurred. There are points of light that are affected by the bokeh filter – they become softer orb shapes and are captured in the customized shape of the bokeh filter.

To make the filters, Marvin finds a shape that he outlines on the Cameo Silhouette (vinyl cutter) software, and fits to the size of his lens. The bokeh filter works by covering the front of the lens of the camera. It (ideally) fits perfectly over the lens, and can be held in place with a very small piece of tape.

“It was not until college that I realized that I was passionate about it [photography]. I did PR for the badminton club – I took pictures of people playing, and actually designed the logo.”

One of Marvin’s first experiences with photography was at his first job in a jewelry store. He would take pictures of the inventory and upload it to the database; on occasion, the pictures were used for advertising.

A Stony Brook University undergraduate of the 2015 class, Marvin had decided to work for two years before returning this year for his MBA. In that time, he worked in networking engineering for a company in Hauppauge, where he’s from. He continued doing photo shoots of friends, and friends of their friends casually during this time, and it was at this job where he began getting recognized for the quality of his work and photos, and he started receiving offers to be paid for his services.

“I had no background in event photography, I had to look things up at the beginning. Now I have a website.”

After working at his job, he came back to Stony Brook University to pursue an MBA to further develop his soft skills – like those in communication and management. Marvin says that he prefers to have his electrical engineering background as a back-end part of what he does. It was at his MBA program’s orientation that he heard David Ecker, the Director of iCREATE, speak about the free spaces and technologies offered and available on campus.

So far, Marvin has worked with some styles including steel wool and milky way shots, but his favorite is portrait photography. He has been experimenting with incorporating bokeh shapes into his portraits. His website can be seen here.

“I would’ve loved these spaces so much as an undergraduate … I’m a commuter and have made the iCREATE Greenhouse my second home here on campus.”

Modeling Rocks at iCREATE

Jackie Zheng is a sophomore Chemistry major who discovered the Innovation Lab at the end of his freshman year. Since then, he’s been involved in the 3D modeling and printing in the Innovation Lab’s Self Service and print queue, which employs a number of UP Mini 2’s, Taz’s, and Ultimakers.

As the event coordinator for ACS (American Chemistry Society), a club of about 20-30 members, Jackie handles a portion of the community outreach that has events with elementary school children that teaches and demonstrates different chemical reactions and explanations.

Every year, the club participates in the Hall of Science’s “National Chemistry Week” in October. (https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/outreach/ncw.html) This event draws many people, Universities, professors, and researchers to discuss and talk about chemistry. For the year 2017, the theme is “Chemistry Rocks” and is open to all interpretations of the theme. Jackie says, “We’re taking this literally, and wanted to show the science and chemistry behind rocks. We want to show minerals, rocks, and crystals through models.”

While Jackie had learned from modeling in high school, he’s trying to learn more through exploring his options. So far, he has experimented with TinkerCAD, and wants to take 3D printing more seriously by using the software and technology available at the Innovation Lab.

For 2017’s National Chemistry Week, Jackie has printed a “Buckyball” model, the structure for bronze, as well as a model of a crystal.

“Models of these, especially the nice metal ones, can be several hundred dollars each.”

The Buckyball is about 70 carbon atoms in a structure that is being used in research to deliver drugs in the body. The ball, rounded and hollow structure from connected, fused rings, can “hold” the drugs inside it. The other two structure models provide a better understanding through visualization and handling.

Jackie finds that models are a more effective way to both teach and learn the basics of chemistry to the younger kids and students, with hopes that they want to pursue chemistry in the future from having earlier exposure.

“You can always draw a molecule on the board; it might be cool, but it’s not real as seeing how it is in front of you. Having the model is the starting point to learn, and not just through memorizing.”

For another future project in chemistry and 3D printing, Jackie is thinking about it printing his own molecule kit. They’re typically needed and used for the organic chemistry classes, and they cost approximately $30 each. “I want to be able to model and make everything myself.”

Needle a fresh new look for Fall?

Sweater weather is in full swing for the semester, Spencer Jarrad, a 3rd-year student and transfer from San Diego City College, has been hard at work in preparation. Instead of going shopping for new clothes this season, Spencer goes shopping for fabric.

“I volunteered at the San Diego Public Library. I was bored over the summer while waiting to move, and I wanted to learn all the machines. I know it’s not really trendy like 3D printers and laser cutters.”

Spencer had no previous background in sewing or making clothing in any way. An accountant before returning back to school, Spencer decided it was time he took the particular style he liked into his own hands. “I wanted to stand out,” he said, “I like math, so it made sense.”

Spencer found iCREATE before he transferred to Stony Brook, by looking up makerspaces before he came, stumbling across the iCREATE Facebook page and Instagram. Upon finding the Innovation Lab here, he found that the Brother sewing machines here was of a similar model to what he used and was familiar with.

With his bike on campus, Spencer would either order off of Etsy online, or bike to JoAnn’s, a fabric and craft shop within a 30 minute trip, and buy fabric by the yard. “The clearance could range from $7 to $20 per yard, and I have picked up silk fabric and geometric prints. I use about 1.5 yards to make a long-sleeve shirt.”

Spencer also clarifies that those were for his nicer shirts. “T-shirts usually cost me only around $5-$10 to make, and it’s extremely cost effective considering how nice they turn out. I don’t want anyone thinking sewing is out of reach skill-wise or cost-wise in any capacity.”

After obtaining the fabric, he uses a template (originally from https://mellysews.com/ – though now he creates him own)  that contains all the pieces of the shirt. He follows the template, tracing it before he cuts it out. As the last step, Spencer then sews each piece together on the sewing machine. So far, Spencer has made shirts, sweaters, and shorts.

“I only made one pair of shorts so far. It didn’t fit. I didn’t realize, but measurements in the store [for your size] and actual measurements are different. A size 32 is actually 36 inches. I spent 6 hours on making the first pair the first time, and because it didn’t fit, I spent another 6 [hours] to make it again.”

On top of making his own clothing, he also heat transfers his own prints onto clothing, pulling designs from textbooks, and other images he likes. On one shirt, he printed a print from a textbook diagram. On another, he got a custom print (through spoonflower.com) on a piece of fabric to get calculator on it.

“I want to eventually make peacoats and overcoats, and elevate my clothing to a level of couture.”

Cloudy in the Greenhouse

Daniella Chernoff, a volunteer and a rising senior in Fall 2017 at Hofstra University, has been volunteering for iCREATE since 2015. She was a student staff member who worked on the Augmented Reality (AR) sandbox that was built for the Earth and Space Sciences department last Spring 2016. Her latest iCREATE project is being added to the Greenhouse and is called the “Sound Cloud” – for its literal definition, and not the online audio distribution platform.

Daniella heard about iCREATE through a friend who was working for iCREATE at the time – Ellie Evans, who created and assembled the 3D printed prosthetic hand in the Summer of 2015.

“It seemed like what Ellie was working on was really interesting, so I got in contact with David [Ecker], the director, and started volunteering here. I usually come in about once or twice a week.”

The cloud runs off of an Arduino, a microphone, and some LED’s that are all connected to a running program on the computer. It responds to sound in terms of volume and flickers, changing to the sound environment it is in. As the volume increases, the colors change from blue to green and purple in response. The LED light floods the cloud’s interior and creates a soft overall effect that reflects the mood of the room.

A Geology major, Daniella worked on both of these projects with no prior knowledge or understanding of coding, wiring, or Arduinos. She pulled together open-source software codes and used some of the knowledge she gained from working on the AR sandbox.

Creating the actual cloud structure was simple. She used simple household supplies that were readily around her. She used a clean water gallon container to store the “parts” with the wires, LED’s and Arduino. She cut it in such a way that there would be an “easy-open flap” to access the interior. The rest of the cloud exterior is polyester fill/fluff. Her original idea was to hang it using fishing wire, and she had a mechanism prepared that used two wooden pencils to hold it in place.

“Combining the software was the hard part, but there is a lot of help to do it online. I didn’t have any prior knowledge when working on the sandbox either.”

Lit at the Innovation Lab

Audio Visual (AV) Services teams up with iCREATE again through John Berwick, a staff member from their Frey Hall Service Counter location.

John started on this project in May 2017 while following up on AV’s other previous projects with iCREATE – namely, the one that custom 3D-printed stands for their charging stations that can be found around Frey Hall. It was then that he heard about iCREATE’s new laser cutter on facility.

He worked on creating a box with lights on it. The goal was that it would be used to switch from red to green when the rooms were finished being checked. This made it clear what which rooms still had to be done.

After a couple of weeks in the Innovation Lab, John was able to fashion a wooden box with lights and switches, connected to a power source (battery). iCREATE was able to supply the balsa wood, which our staff member Ahsanul Torza helped to cut into the box template using the laser cutter. The box template was found through a website that took dimensions and created a laser cutter compatible file. John added on the text, and specified the placement and sizes of the holes for the lights and switches.

The soldered and assembled lights, wires, and resistors were then hot glued to the back of the wood, and enclosed in the rest of the wooden box. John found these supplies through Adafruit, leading the project to cost a total amount of $50-60, relatively inexpensive to create.

For when it’s being used, John soldered a USB male cable to an iPad charger to connect it to power, which provides 5V. He intends to mount it in the Frey Hall Service Counter office at the back of the office where the box is designed to fit exactly the width between the whiteboard and the door. This way, it would be easy to see at a quick glance.

“Buildings are not closed down to the degree that we would like and need to them to be. Lights are left on, projectors are left on, and chairs are out of place. This project is a really cool idea to benefit the school. It won’t just be something to look at – it’s going to be a project that’s being used.”

John is looking forward to the completion and installment of this in the Frey Hall AV location. “One last touch we’d work on is adjusting the brightness. The lights are really bright right now, but if it [the employment of this project] works well, we’re planning on coming back to make more of these for the rest of the facilities.”

iCREATE makes a splash at the LI MakerFaire

The Eastern Long Island Mini Maker Faire took place on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Port Jefferson Maritime Explorium. For the third year in a row, SBU iCREATE (previously known as the SBU Innovation Lab) attended the fair featured as one of the makers, and tabled with several different family-friendly, interactive activities including 3D Doodler pens, a PacMan robot maze, DIY arm braces, and 3D puzzles made of cardboard and balsa wood.

As described by their website, the Maker Faire is “a gathering of fascinating, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do.” The makers could be anyone, ranging from engineers to artists, and is a family-friendly showcase of the interesting things people do in the spirit of innovation, creativity, resourcefulness, and invention.

The impact of attending and tabling at this event reached both iCREATE staff members who attended, and attendees of all ages who stopped by our stations.

Several of the stationed activities were an instant hit, with lines and crowds throughout the entire duration of the event. They were evenly split, designed with two goals in mind: to engage people in technology, and to encourage thinking “out-of-the-box” with those who did engage.

The PacMan Robot Race, Google cardboards (VR), and 3D Doodler pens all use technology to capture the visitor’s attention with the way they work. Not all of these new technologies are readily available to the average person or visitor. By exposing them to this new perspective, they are thinking in new ways. It inspires them to experiment and be creative by testing it out.

The others, being the arm braces, 3-D puzzles, and Vision Trainer showcase, are bits to takeaway as “food for thought” after the demonstration/interaction or explanation. It encourages the visitor to think creatively and not in a way he/she typically would in a normal environment. It allows them to create something new and original through innovation.

One of the more popular stations, the 3D Doodler pen station could be summarized as frustration – but in the best way. Learning how to use the pen comes with a bit of a steeper learning curve. It’s not the easiest skill to pick up, but using it is intuitive. With some practice on control of the pen and the filament, more complex designs and patterns can be created. For example, some creations iCREATE student staff have made include a tricycle, a colored cup, a tree, and a figure of a small person surfing on a little board.

Of those who visited the station, it was a familiar-yet-unfamiliar item that most have at least heard of, or seen somewhere on the internet. The 3D Doodler pens are an increasingly common “toy” being introduced to the public. Famous for their “draw in mid-air” pitch, the pens captivate audiences of all ages. While the buzzword “3D printing” is extremely capable of drawing people, it also deters those who feel they are not tech-savvy or advanced enough to play or experiment with it. Exposing people of all ages to how simple and easy it is to use breaks a lot of barriers.

Some people picked it up immediately, making intricate designs and patterns freehand. On the other hand, some struggled with keeping the filament from sticking to itself. They were all so intrigued by the possibilities of what they could create with the pen, that our staff were kept busy the entire event.

“There was one girl who was playing with the pen, but her father told her to let the other kids play, and she started crying because she didn’t make anything,” Jennifer Ng said, a staff member who worked at the Doodler station, “ Because she hadn’t used the pens for long at all, I offered to help her make a house that she was able to take home. Instead of doing it for her though, I held the top end of the pen to guide her while she controlled the button, and after a little while, she was able to create a house with my help. This was one of my more memorable encounters because I was able to help a young girl create something that she could be proud of without having to do it for her.”

One station, the PacMan robot maze was a crowd favorite among both children and their parents. Children and parents alike waited in line, waiting for a chance to beat the high score and to get their name on the board. Visitors raced each other by recording the amount of time it takes for each person to go through it. The difficulty comes in where it is slightly hard to control in terms of direction and speed. The Sphero is a fun and interactive, and introduces any beginner or person of any level to robotics in a simple, hands-on way. We had a whiteboard present to get peoples’ names, ages, and times, and it adds a competitive edge to it, because everyone wants to get the fastest time.

Director of iCREATE, David Ecker said, “I think the concept of the PAC Man race was the best way to teach by doing a learning game. This game was teaching them how to interact with a technology they were familiar with, the iPad, and control a robot that was strange to them. This allowed some of them to overcome any fear they had using the unknown robot, then develop a level of confidence to actually race around the maze. These are exactly the basics of learning through using a game platform.”

Rohan Kingan, a staff member who worked at that station said, “It seemed like most of the kids interested in playing the Sphero game were ages 5-13, but the parents were pretty interested in it too. We had one 31 year old who was pretty set on beating the high score, so that was pretty funny. The high score whiteboard really caught a lot of interest. People wanted to have their name up there, motivating them to come over and try, or try multiple times.”

By the end of their turn and the wait, parents had many questions. Staff members received constant questions on how the robots worked, how they moved the way they did, and even how much the Spheros (robots used) were and where they could find one for their kid(s).

“I know the interaction that Rohan had was positive in teaching all ages on how the robotic movement worked inside,” David said, “It gave them a better idea (especially with the clear one) on how the internal mechanisms allows for the ball to move in different directions.

The excitement doesn’t stop at just the 3D Doodler pens and Sphero robots; the other stations such as the 3D puzzles and DIY arm braces piqued a lot of passerbys’ interests.

The 3D puzzles were prepared by one of our staff members, Ahsanul Torza, with iCREATE’s new laser cutter. This tool has not yet been opened to members of the facility, because research on safety regarding what it can handle and create is underway, but simple projects such as cutting balsa wood has been popular. It was a showcase what iCREATE’s facilities are capable of, and also to engage people in finishing the puzzle.

The puzzle was created by laser cutting the template out of the wood, and punching out the pieces. Each piece was a different component of the object. The pieces were then assembled to make a 3D object, as opposed to the average 2D jigsaw puzzle. Alike the 3D Doodler pens, some take to it immediately, while it takes some longer to adjust due to the added dimension and level of difficulty from the average puzzle.

The DIY arm brace station came with its own background story. There was a hypothetical situation: “You are with a friend on a trip, or at a playground, when suddenly your friend falls and breaks their arm. The fastest the closest ambulance or medical help can arrive is several hours away, and the contact over the phone informs you to stabilize the arm so it does not break or shift any further. Of the limited resources available, you need to keep the arm still and from breaking further so that they do not hurt themselves more. What do you do?”

Children had a number of supplies to work with, including gauze, cardboard pieces, string, and band-aids that could be used creatively to help your friend. Thosen who stopped by would have to “think on the spot” with those supplies and create an arm brace of their own. It was unique because it is similar and accurate to how a real-life situation could be when one need to innovate and improvise on the spot.

Jennifer said, “It was great to see a lot of kids running around with the arm braces we brought as well, because the activity is something that is applicable to real life, and introduces skills that could be useful should they ever get into a situation where someone gets injured. Though the arm braces that we made may not necessarily work if someone were to actually break their arm, the activity shows kids that, even with limited supplies, they have the ability to create/build things they need.”

“By the end of the event, some kids were asking each other and some of us if we would sign their casts,” said Sera Nakisli, another student staff member.

One station was the Vision Trainer project. It was a showcase: though originally planned to be a demonstration, it was not possible to fix it or get it to work. This was due to the incompatibility of motor parts from the limited budget and availability of necessary parts to make it run correctly. Unfortunately, its current configuration causes the motor to burn out quickly and does not allow it run the way it should.

As such, this was used as an example of how innovative ideas are born, created, worked on, and also how it doesn’t always work out.

By the end of the event, iCREATE staff members found it memorable, and felt like it was a success to the community and for iCREATE. Ahsanul said, “We had a lot more traffic than last year, and we did a lot better. I didn’t stay for whole thing, but the kids were reacting a lot more enthusiastically.”

Narmin shared, “It was really cool that our activities has a wide audience of people ranging from adults to young kids. For the DIY arm braces, I gave one girl two braces so she had two arms with it!”

Overall, iCREATE’s attendance at the MakerFaire was able to influence children and adults with fun, interactive, hands-on activities, and creative thinking. David said, “As I see it, the hands on activities that were developed and taught allowed the community find a place to enhance their knowledge and skill set around new technology, which is why we exist. It is to allow new ideas to be developed and implemented through thinking, creating, and innovating.  Our table made that accomplishment through examples like the successes with the maze and the failures with vision trainer.”

 

Purpose in College through Innovation

​​Julian Kingston, a senior Electrical Engineering major and the founding member and President of the Global Innovation Team (now known as CentriSeed Innovations), has a special place in his heart for the iCREATE Innovation Lab. He found iCREATE while he was going through a rough time in his college career when he struggled with his major.

Julian describes the entirety of his college experience as a roller coaster, sophomore year being the steepest hill. “I was dead. My life was school, eat, and sleep.” Going into engineering, he felt as though it was all theory and that it didn’t feel applicable to things in real life, or anything he wanted to do when he originally entered college. Julian spent his sophomore year Spring Break pondering and contemplating plans for the rest of his life before he realized, “I wanted to go abroad and change people’s lives.” His personal and professional journey surrounded his feelings of finding his purpose.

Actively working on building and forming something, Julian pursued forming a new club, at the time Global Innovation Team, with two other colleagues. The Engineers Without Borders chapter on campus was closing and shutting down and all of its eboard members were leaving. Julian wanted to do something more to continue the valuable work they did. Global Innovation Team was born.

“I came and met David [Ecker] at the Innovation Lab and we were discussing entrepreneurship and what ideas I could implement, when suddenly Dave told me to stop talking during the meeting. Dave took the time to show me what others wouldn’t. He saw that potential in me, and that I was someone ready to go do something, but I needed some concrete ideas. I’m never not prepared now.”

Trying to bring a club to life is no easy task. It takes effort split amongst the founding members who push for it, taking up days and nights, and as Julian describes, “like an internship taking up to 10-20 hours a week.”

“I was thinking, ‘I have no idea why I’m in college right now.’ I would’ve dropped out of school. I had no motivation, incredibly hard classes. I didn’t enjoy it the way I thought I would. Becoming an e-board member, being president, having people depend on me, having this responsibility, finding iCREATE’s Innovation Lab – all this gave me meaning to my college experience, and it gave me a purpose to me being here. I thought I was wasting my time in my major.”

iCREATE’s Innovation Lab was where the members of CentriSeed Innovation made their first moves and projects. They have since worked on Roth Pond’s restoration, the Nobel Halls sustainable garden, campus-wide waste management, a bicycle generator, and many others. They have grown on campus and helped to improve the community. “iCREATE’s Innovation Lab was the space of choice to build and work on projects because of it’s open, welcoming environment. There are not many places like that, especially on campus, that will support us. They supported growth, failure, and allowed us to keep trying and working.”

“The worst part of being on this roller coaster is that you don’t know when the bumps are coming, but this is what made me realize – the roller coaster is kinda fun,” Julian said.

CentriSeed Innovation has grown from his original group of 3-4 people in his sophomore and junior year to an average of 30 people who come to each general body meeting now. “It’s a full time job. Starting a club isn’t as fancy or pretty as it sounds.” The name change is to support the growth of the club so that it can continue to expand. “It’s a three part name. It’s the center of innovation, and beginning of new ideas to sprout.” Julian wants Centriseed Innovation to reach and flourish on other college campuses as well.

As Julian graduates this May 2017 with his Electrical Engineering degree, he is excited and confident about his plans moving forward with the skills he has acquired in Electrical Engineering and leadership.

3D printing to impact bio-engineering

Dr. Yizhi Meng, an assistant professor and researcher for Stony Brook University, could usually be found working in the Heavy Engineering Building. She stumbled across iCREATE in Fall 2016 and was able to produce a few custom-designed well plates for use in her laboratory.

Dr. Meng studies how to engineer 3-D micro-tumors of 50,000-80,000 cells, also known as “cancer on a chip”. As described in her bio, “seeks to study new approaches to developing bio-inspired materials and strategies for tissue engineering”.

What does that mean?

By growing multiple micro-tumors at once, you could perform drug screenings of cancer drugs. Using micro-tumors keeps it as realistic as possible, instead of animal studies. This in-vitro model is less expensive, removes animal variation as a potential error, and allows the trial and test of hundreds of drugs at a time. In short, they aim to create a better target to test different types of drugs, and this requires constant use of a lot of well plates to grow cancer cells on.

This is crucial because of the way these micro-tumors and cultures behave on a hard plastic dish. Even though this is the way we have been studying them, this is not how they would behave when they are in the body. The purpose of the lab is to test these cells in a safe environment where unintentional effects are not exaggerated.

Traditional trays with these wells are made with a hydrophobic polystyrene, a waterproof hard plastic, with a flat bottom. While these can easily be bought from about any laboratory item supplier, the bottom of the wells make it a slippery surface for the cells to grasp onto and they often slip in transport. “This sliding interferes with imaging, and that leads to other difficulties” says Dr. Meng.

Dr. Meng heard of a 3-D printing service on campus through other staff members. At a strong STEM research campus like Stony Brook University, 3-D printers are not unheard of, however, almost all of them are for private departmental or laboratory access use only. Dr. Meng got in contact and came to iCREATE director David Ecker with a question: Was it possible to produce a tangible and simple solution?

Giancarlos, one of our iCREATE staff members, assisted with Dr. Meng and her laboratory staff. After several iterations of working out and rendering the details and dimensions of the file, the print of the trays took about one day to complete in our iCREATE facility, using the Form 2 3-D printer. This printer is unique from the others because it uses resin to produce a detailed, denser, and smoother end product.

There were two versions designed that differed by the shape on the bottom. One was ice-cream cone shaped, and the other was like rounded hemisphere. These little indentations allow the cells to stay stable in the center during transport without sliding.

Currently, the resin material that the trays are printed with is still being tested for its biocompatibility but so far, Dr. Meng says they have been working well. “The material is not killing them, and the cells are healthy. It appears to be biologically inert.” The well plates can be sterilized for reuse when needed.

“Now, I have so many ideas of what other things to try to make,” Dr. Meng said, “It’s like bypassing the big suppliers. An idea can move from a CAD file to a physical object.”

A Sense of Play

Philip Baldwin, a tenured professor in the Theatre department and international grant recipient, is a firm and passionate believer in changing “STEM” to “STEAM”. A frequent visitor of the iCREATE spaces, he is always spotted trying something new.

Professor Baldwin has hosted numerous classes each semester, each in something different like “Human-Computer Interfaces”, “Immersive Spaces”, and “The Telepresent Self”. Several of his classes took place and met regularly each week in iCREATE’s Innovation Lab and incorporated the use of inexpensive but pioneering technologies.

By working to incorporate creative, innovative thinking with cutting edge technologies into his classes, Professor Baldwin is promoting thinking out-of-the-box to his students so that it’s relevant to all audiences – not just the engineers and the researchers. “ The cool people should get a hold of this first. We’ve created a schism between the scientists and the humans.”

Unlike some professors, he doesn’t try to make it a difficult course for the students, but focuses on the learning experience itself. “It’s about the cultural health of the individual,” he says, “This stuff is so new, even I don’t know it. I come from four generations of professors, and students are my colleagues.”

Using iCREATE’s Innovation Lab and its technologies has been an integral part of what he teaches to his students, and the mindset that he tries to promote in all his work. “We are should be trying to find the next Steve Jobs by heightening innovation with college students to see beyond the numbers at Stony Brook. It’s about the ability to see in a different way, and the sense of ‘play’.”

Ever have a task you never quite get around to?

Much like the rest of us, Matt Martini felt like he never had the time or resources to work on his kitchen utensils. “I wanted to organize my utensil drawer. All the silverware was a mess.”

Matt is a Cornell graduate with a degree in engineering and currently a student at the School of Professional Development at Stony Brook University. With the iCREATE spaces, he was able to work on a kitchen utensil holder using the paper cutter, and laser cutter.

Matt heard about the Innovation Lab through David Ecker, the director of iCREATE at one of their DoIT staff events. He started on the project about two months ago, working on it in his spare time in brief several hour intervals. He says he spent maybe up to a total of eight hours on the entire holder so far, and it is almost at its final step. The utensil holder functions like a tray and has each of the utensils stacked on it.

To produce his utensil holder, Matt photographed each of the utensils with measurements to get an accurate image of the size and shape of each one, which he manipulated and clarified on Adobe Photoshop to mark the outlines. This design was then moved to the paper cutter. Then, he experimented with using the Innovation Lab’s paper cutter to make two prototypes before he moved on to the laser cutter, which he is considering testing with foam first.

His end result is going to be a wooden holder that will be positioned and designed exactly the way he wants.

Matt said, “I had this project in my head from way back, but I never had the equipment possible.”
