About ATAS

Our office serves as a central communicator regarding academic deadlines, policies, and events to all undergraduates. We help students develop their academic plans for graduation and work with students in academic difficulty. We provide overall communication to Stony Brook undergraduates about academic advising and the evaluation of transfer credits for general education requirements.

Our office advises sophomores, juniors, seniors, and second bachelor degree students in the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, School of Journalism, and School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.

At Stony Brook University, academic advising is an intentional, educational partnership between advisors and students. Grounded in teaching and learning and approached from a developmental perspective, good academic advising considers and respects students’ diverse backgrounds, interest and abilities, and facilitates the identification and achievement of educational, career, and life goals. Adopted August 7, 2009.

The Academic and Transfer Advising Services Office is where you’ll find the answers to all your academic questions and concerns throughout your sophomore, junior, and senior years. Advisors are available to help students plan their academic programs to ensure a smooth transition to Stony Brook. Advisors will evaluate your transfer credits for general education requirements, facilitate the evaluation of your transfer credits for your major and upper-division requirements, and enter your transfer credits on your Stony Brook transcript.
