Magaline Alcindor

Magaline Alcindor is a junior from Baldwin, NY and is on the pre-med track, majoring in biology and minoring in Africana Studies. She joined the academic peer advisor internship because she wants to help other students. She is also involved in English Pals, mentoring freshmen in CSTEP, and has been a TA for CSTEP. She is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. In five years, she sees herself in medical school. She describes herself as friendly, easy to talk to, determined, funny, and empathetic. Magaline’s favorite hobby is listening to music. Her favorite classes at Stony Brook University are any Africana studies classes. Her favorite spots on campus are the quiet spots of the Melville Library. If she could have any job in the world she would want one that allows her to make a positive change in the world. Her role models are her parents. If she were given one day to do anything she wanted, she would travel the world.

Naomi

Naomi Atobiloye

Naomi Atobiloye is a senior from Lagos, Nigeria. She is a Psychology major on the Premedical track. She is currently a volunteer in the Stony Brook Hospital Radiology Department, a member of Psi Chi Honor Society, a Biopsychology research assistant, and a member of SBU Premed Outreach Committee. She hopes to be graduating medical school in the next five years and starting a residency in Pediatric or Emergency medicine. As an international student, she applied for the APA internship for a chance to meet people and extend a helping hand to students in need of guidance with their college careers. She is friendly, outgoing and addicted to TV shows. Her favorite classes are anything biology-related because she finds the body interesting. Her favorite spots on campus are the fountain outside the Wang center and the Humanities Atrium. Her role model is definitely her mother. If she was given a day to do anything she wanted, she would travel to outer space. As long as safety is guaranteed, of course.

Hudda Baig

Hudda Baig

Hudda Baig is a junior studying Pre-Dental. She is majoring in Spanish and minoring in Biology. She is from St. James. She is currently the President of Volunteers Around the World Dental Chapter, a member of Pre-Dental Society, and Project Sunshine. In five years, she hopes to be halfway through attending dental school. She is interning with Academic Peer Advising to have more involvement and participation in the campus community, to gain more relations with fellow students and professional staff in the department as well as the campus. She enjoys reading, listening to music, swimming, and playing piano in her downtime. She’s been traveling the world since she was two-years-old and hopes to go to even more countries that she hasn’t been to, in the future. Her greatest role models are her parents. Her favorite spot on campus is the Staller Steps, sitting on the grass, and enjoying the warm weather. If she could do one thing that she knew she couldn’t fail, it would be to provide education, food, and shelter to the underserved communities around the world.

Gregory Davis

Gregory Davis

Gregory Davis is a junior from Yaphank majoring in History and Sociology and minoring in Writing and Women & Gender Studies. He is also earning his MAT in Social Studies as well. The academic peer advising internship is a great opportunity to work with students and gain valuable experience working one on one with students. Greg would like to become a high school teacher and possibly an administrator at some point. He balances his academic career with family life as he is a married father of three and a has full time job. One of his favorite places on campus is the 3rd floor lounge in the SBS building, he spends most of his free time there between classes. He loves being back at school after a long absence and loves all of his classes, but particularly his Sociology classes. He likes to walk around campus at night as well and just admire how beautiful it is. If Greg could do anything he wanted he would spend his time educating people about the importance of understanding and compromise.

Helody Dorvilus

Helody Dorvilus

A senior from Stony Brook University, Helody Dorvilus is an international student who is majoring in Biology and recently minoring in Anthropology after her study abroad during the summer of 2015 in Tanzania. She is engaging in the Academic Peer Advising internship as she seeks to assist students. She is also a Commuter Assistant, a member or the American Chemical Society, and the Pre-Med Society. In five years, she sees herself working and aiding people as a Physical Therapist, managing an orphanage caring for children along with a community center to welcome and support those in need. She enjoys playing tennis, badminton, board games, and video games. She describes herself as optimistic, generous, caring, humble and adventurous. One of her favorite spots on campus is the Wang Center for its exoticness. Besides labs where she loves to practice hands-on, she also enjoys Anthropology courses because she describes them as eye-opening and better understanding of who we are as human beings. Her role models are her father, her mother, and her grandmother. If she was given one day to do anything she wanted, she would visit Google and experience this amazing association helping the world.

Christopher Friello

Christopher Friello

Chris Friello is a senior from Rocky Point. He is majoring in History and is also in the MAT program for Teaching Social Studies. He is partaking in the academic peer advising internship because he considers it a great way to get involved with the school by helping his fellow peers. In five years, he sees himself teaching Social Studies in the high school from which he graduated. He describes himself as helpful, nice, and athletic. Chris’ favorite activities include playing Basketball and Ultimate Frisbee. His favorite classes are history classes taught by professor Barnhart. His favorite spot on campus is in the new Island Federal Credit Union Arena, where he spends a lot of time watching Stony Brook Basketball games. If he could have any job in the world, he would want a job involving Basketball. His role models consist of professors here at Stony Brook, which includes professor Barnhart and Dr. Fouron. If he was given one day to do anything he wanted, he would most likely attend a game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Naurin Islam is a senior student from West Babylon. She is majoring in Political Science on the Pre-Law track. Her hobbies are drawing and doing digital art, and hope to make a comic book in the future. She is a member of the Stony Brook College Democrats, a Provisional Member of the Sigma Beta Honor Society, and a member in the Pre-Law Society. In five years she sees herself graduated from a top law school with a job as an international human rights lawyer working for the the United Nations. Her favorite subjects are history and art, and her favorite classes are anything related to international history and politics. Her role model is her father. She describes herself as an open-minded and creative person. She is currently participating in the academic peer advising internship to help students like her when she first transferred to Stony Brook in Fall 2014. One day she hopes to travel and just enjoy the little things in life.

Xin Yao Lin is a junior from New York City, Queens. She is currently majoring in Psychology and Asian American Studies. She is also minoring in biology and digital arts. She decided to be an APA because she wants to help and guide students and peers. She is also a Peer Academic Success Coach, research assistant for Leadership & Creativity lab, member of National Residence Hall Honorary, and Campus Involvement Project. In five years, she sees herself in graduate school studying for I.O. Psychology. She describes herself as cheerful, energetic, optimistic, and understanding. Xin Yao’s favorite hobby is eating food and desserts, going to museums, reading nonfictions, and taking pictures. Her favorite classes are any psychology courses, Asian studies related courses, and artistic classes. Her favorite spot on campus is Wang Center because the building is nice, and she likes the food there. If she can have any job in the world, she would want to be a design engineer that can design new innovations to make people’s’ lives easier. Her role models are her parents. If she were given one day to do anything she wanted, she would travel all around the world and eat all the tasty foods.

Sabahat Sarfaraz is a Junior majoring in English Honors and Psychology. She is an Academic Peer Advisor and part of the President’s Council of Student Advisors. She also participates in clinical research on Adolescent Development of Emotions and Personality Traits (ADEPT). In five years, she sees herself as a counselor or an advisor and hopes to become a published author. She considers herself an introverted individual, but she is extremely friendly, and once you get to know her she has a lot to say. Her hobbies include painting and lots of reading. Her favorite spots on campus are the Staller steps and the Humanities atrium. If she was given one day to do anything, she would travel in time.

Santino Scibelli

Santino Scibelli is a senior from Center Moriches. He is majoring in psychology, minoring in sociology, and has taken classes towards his pre-nursing interest. He became involved with the academic peer advising internship as a way to connect more with students on campus and gain insight into the daily experiences of an academic advisor. In five years, he sees himself either working in higher education as an advisor for college students or as a registered nurse. He describes himself as optimistic, easygoing, energetic, friendly, and adventurous. His favorite hobby is traveling to new places. His favorite spot on campus is the Staller Steps, where you will find him doing homework, eating, or sleeping. If he could have any job in the world, he would want to be a doctor or a professor at a university. His role models are his family and close friends. If he was given the day to do anything he wanted, he would take a relaxing day with a friend to go somewhere they’ve never been to before.

Matthew Stephan

Matt Stephan is a junior from Sayville, New York. He is an Economics and Applied Math and Statistics double major. He joined the academic peer advising internship to become more involved with Stony Brook and to help new and transfer students. He is a member of the Economics Club and hopes to pursue a career in finance or a related field. If he could have any job, he would choose to manage a mutual fund. Matt enjoys reading, playing guitar and trivia. One of his favorite spots on campus to read is the Union Starbucks. His favorite course he has taken at Stony Brook is American Class Structure with Professor Michael Zweig. If Matt was given one day to do anything he wanted, he would choose to sleep in and go to the beach.

Tahseen Tabassum is a junior from west campus. She is majoring in Chemical & Molecular Engineering. She is taking part in APA internship because she considers it an amazing opportunity to help her peers and doing some contribution to her institution. In five years she sees herself in a scientific research and development facility. She describes herself as playful, friendly, open-minded and optimistic. Tahseen’s favorite hobbies for the past few years have been painting and travelling. Her favorite classes are Modern physics and any high energy related physics class. Her favorite spot on campus is the Melville Library. If she could have any job in the world, she would want a job that would contribute to the development of her society. Her role models are her family and teachers. She would love to help prevent poverty and bring peace to the world.

Carolin Valet

Carolin Valet

Carolin E. Valet is currently a senior here at Stony Brook. She is majoring in Psychology with a concentration in sociology. She is part of the academic peer advising internship because she wanted to give back to the office that has helped her several times in making sure that she was on track with all of her academic requirements. This internship is a great opportunity to grow as a person and help students that were in the same position she was a year ago. In addition to this internship,she is involved in other activities around campus. She is the secretary of the Stony Brook belly dancing team, a belly dancing fitness instructor in the Recreational Center, and a helper in the Belly Dancing Club. Though she enjoys staying fit, she loves taking courses in child psychology. She is an energetic, helpful, out-going, and caring person. In 5 years she sees herself working her way through her P.H.D. and working in an organization or Psychological facility for children. Her parents have been the greatest role models, pushing her to achieve what they couldn’t achieve in their country. If she could go one day into the future, she would take the winning lottery numbers back to the past and use the money to help her family in the Dominican Republic and donate money to different schools there, and various non-profit organizations in New York.

Melissa Weber is a senior from West Sayville, NY, majoring in Sociology. She is participating in the academic peer advising internship because she considers it a good opportunity to help students & gain experience in academia. In five years, she sees herself working as a school social worker in an urban community. She describes herself as loyal, optimistic, outgoing, and adventurous. Melissa’s favorite hobbies are playing guitar & writing music. She also enjoys experiencing life outdoors. Her favorite class is Sociology of Youth. Her favorite spot on campus is in the Humanities Atrium, where she spends her time studying or reading. If she could do anything in the world, she would open an orphanage that helps teenagers transition from youth to young adults. Her role model is Ruth of Moab, from the Bible. If she was able to spend the day with someone from history she would want to spend the day with Abraham Lincoln.
