Minkkinen is a photographer who works in black in white. He has produced many self-portraits over the years. His self-portraits are often taken in nature. He is often hard to see because he blends himself into his surroundings so well. He uses his body to mimic the environment around himself.
Symmetry is used throughout his work. In many photographs this is accomplished by either reflections or the placement of his own body. Water is used a lot fore reflections. This also adds the element of symbolism to Minkkinen’s work. Water is often used to symbolize life which reinforces the idea of Minkkinen adding himself into his photographs.
Minkkinen’s work is also very natural. He uses his body to serve as a sort of repetition to the pattern found in nature. In one photograph he uses his body to recreate the mountains found in the background. In another, he submerges his body in water and appears almost as a rock rather than a person. BY doing so he manages to keep a sense of natural calm in his photographs and blur the difference between humans and nature.
