Basket

This makeup is based on the poem “basket” by Kathy Jetn̄il-Kijiner. I drew a basket on my chin and glued a real piece of basket onto my mouth in the shape of a smile to reflect the ending of the poem. I made the eye makeup very neutral in order to keep it pretty and simple so as to not take away from the other things I added. I put scrapes all over my face to represent the line “scrape your floor bare” and dirty tissues to represent the line “littered with scraps tossed by others”. The vine on top of my head references the line “thin dried strips of leaves”. The basic idea and inspiration behind this look was a woman who was once pretty has given herself to everyone until she’s been left with nothing. She is an empty basket, left scraped, bloody and with nothing to give but she smiles because that’s how she’s built, she has no other option.
