The Thorne Lab celebrates the dissertation defense of Dr. Julia Stepanuk!

Julia completed her Master’s of Science in Thorne Lab in 2017 and continued on in the Thorne Lab as a PhD student in the Ecology and Evolution department. Julia’s dissertation uses drone imagery and sighting data to understand humpback whale behavior, foraging, and body condition in the New York Bight, and to understand and forecast humpback distribution in the Northeast US more broadly. Her work is a culmination of five intense seasons of data collection, which was the results of lots of hard work and help from other members of the Thorne Lab and SoMAS.

Julia is joining the Biodiversity Research Institute as a Quantitative Ecologist in August. Congratulations to Dr. Stepanuk, we wish you all the best at BRI!
