This week during shadowing at help desk, I assumed the general duties of answering the phone, live chat, and emails. I answered a user’s question about using virtual SINC site outside of the United States and informed the user that it should work since it’s a browser based program. I think it’s important to know how virtual SINC sites works because there are many international students that may need to access Stony Brook software overseas. The virtual SINC sites allows for users to access certain programs. I received another question about program in regards to saving work onto the desktop. A user was doing work on the virtual SINC site for four hours when an error message suddenly came up and gave a connection error, causing her to log off and lose the work. I unfortunately told her that we can’t recover the data from our side and advised her to save data often when working on a paper/project. During my shadowing at help desk I received a phone call in regards to an alarm going off in the Harriman SINC site. I was notified that this issue can occur when the door is prompted open or not properly closed. When a teacher reserves a site, they are granted access to the room via their id card. Therefore in the future, it’s good to remind teachers to close the door after they are finished using the site. By the time I went over to Pam’s office to tell her about the alarm, another teacher had already called in and the issue was resolved.
During my shadowing with site managers Sharon and Danny who was subbing for Erika at the time, the SINC site was very busy. I assumed my normal role of taking attendance on SBconnect and answering questions posed by students that came to the desk. Danny explained to me about how the final weeks schedule works and how extended hours start on Friday, May 8th. Consultants will work there regular shifts but the library will be open for extended hours that were offered during live signups. He also told me to double check and make sure that the finals week print out found in the SINC sites actually matches up with what hours they are open. During the shift we found a couple of errors for closing times for SINC sites but they have now been corrected. I feel that as future senior consultants and especially site managers it’s important to know how signups work for temp weeks, before/after breaks and finals weeks. New and returning consultants should already know the rules for these weeks but if they have a question, they will be looking at senior consultants for the answer. All the information about sign ups for these weeks can be found on Blackboard or in the emails sent out by Rose and Pam.
This week there was no internship class but instead we had Roth Regatta!!! Personally this is my second time doing the event, but the first time doing it with TLT. In all honesty I had a lot of fun building the appa boat with other consultants. This year we built the boat in Gray college for a total build time of about a week. The first thing we did was move all the cardboard over from West Apartments to Gray college and then we began construction. We built late into the night, staying up to construct the base of the boat as well as finish painting the whole project. On the last day before the event, we ended up staying up until 4am to finish the boat completely. Everyone split into different groups to focus on different tasks. One group focused on painting the boat. Another group focused on designing the t-shirts for the boat participants and the pushers. Luckily, someone ordered pizza and brought boxes of soda to help stay up through the night. Overall it was a really fun bonding team building experience working with the senior consultants and interns. I felt like I got to know the other consultants on another level outside of the typical work environment.
