Season 3, Northern Exposure
I apologize for the multiple announcements, but I found a PERFECT example of a digital stories. I’m sure very few of you have heard of or watch the 1990s hit television series, Northern Exposure. I highly recommend it. I was watching a Season 3 episode, in which one of the main characters, Ed, decides to make a movie about his hometown, Cicely, Alaska. His production has perfect timing, pacing, musical background, and his passion comes through in his concise narrative. It’s short and gets to the point. What impressions did you get from this short, digital story about Cicely and Ed? He’s using video clips, most students use images with transitions (or a combination of both) Watch this an you’ll get the idea of producing a digital story – (it’s good)!
We’ll talk about the components of a digital story in class on Wednesday. Watch Ed’s story and see if you can see the components on your own. List what you think the components of a digital story are in a reply to this post.

voice-point of view, audio-soundtrack, continuity-pacing, passion-emotion, question, narrative, resolution
The seven components of digital story telling are point of view, a dramatic question, emotional content, voice, music, economy, and pacing.
The director of this video does a good job of incorporating the seven components of digital story telling. Using his point of view and voice he was able to convey his idea of his emotion towards his home town. Already those are three components. The emotional content was displayed through his imagery of the town he lived in and the people that populate the area. The pace of the video was medium, the music he used went to match his voice over so it keeps the viewer up to speed. The question he was asking is about his community where he lives.
Components include the voice of the author, audio/music, continuity/pace, description of his/her passions, question that is answered by the story, narrative, and point of view.
It could also include people that contributed to your story, introduction to your theme of the story, why this story is important to you, and what you learned from your story.
