What is Family?

What is family? by Jane Thomas

Reflection

  1. A digital story is a video that showcases a certain aspect of one’s life. They combine videos, photos, narration, music, text, and more. Digital storytelling is the video form of a self-expressive piece that explores and explains a certain concept or topic of one’s choice.
  2. From this project I learned how to combine different forms of multimedia to covey a specific message in an informative and creative manner.
  3. Since this project taught me a bit about creaitivity, I could use the creativity skills I gained from project in other projects in either my academic, professional, or personal life.
  4. My favorite aspect of this project was getting to gather all my favorite pictures of my family and freinds and putting them into a slideshow.
  5. I decided to talk about my family and friends and the relationships I had with them and also explain that in a reflective video. I made me appreaciate my family and friends much more than I did before.
  6. While recording my voice for narration, the sound did not come out as well as I had hoped and therefore I had to re-record my voice over and over agian to get the right quality.
  7. I would not change anything about this project because I loved every aspect of it.
  8. I learned how to use creativity in reflecting on an aspect of my life.

Holography

Holography, what is it really? Where is it going to take us in the future? Where has it already taken us? In our presentation I have introduced the concept of a hologram; a three dimensional image created by the interference of light from a laser or other coherent light source. I conveyed a brief history of holography which originated with its conception in 1947 to its  actual realization in 1972. Then Reese introduced all of the applications of holography from appearing at presidential campaigns to a whimsical child’s play item. Rahan then introduces the logistics of holography. How it is that holograms work, and the like. It is truly miraculous thing, holograms, that makes science fiction a reality. Imagine, if you would, a class taught by a teacher in some far off land, or perhaps even on vacation. An amazing idea, right? Wrong it is more than idea it is a reality.and it will soon be a pivotal part of the way as we as humans communicate, which is what Shawn resolved our presentation with. Technology is what we have founded modern day literacy on, and holography is yet another medium by which we can become literate, functional members of society. Could you have even imagined this twenty years ago? Can you imagine what it will be like in twenty years?

Ed’s Digital Story About His Hometown, Cicely, Alaska

Season 3, Northern Exposure

I apologize for the multiple announcements, but I found a PERFECT example of a digital stories.  I’m sure very few of you have heard of or watch the 1990s hit television series, Northern Exposure.  I highly recommend it.  I was watching a Season 3 episode, in which one of the main characters, Ed, decides to make a movie about his hometown, Cicely, Alaska.  His production has perfect timing, pacing, musical background, and his passion comes through in his concise narrative.  It’s short and gets to the point.  What impressions did you get from this short, digital story about Cicely and Ed?    He’s using video clips, most students use images with transitions (or a combination of both)  Watch this an you’ll get the idea of producing a digital story –  (it’s good)!

We’ll talk about the components of a digital story in class on Wednesday.  Watch Ed’s story and see if you can see the components on your own.  List what you think the components of a digital story are in a reply to this post.
