Current PhD Candidate Haley Akemi Briggles has been awarded a Dissertation Fellowship from the American Association of University Women. AAUW American Fellowships support women scholars who are pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. It is AAUW’s largest fellowship program and the oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States. Congratulations to Haley for receiving this highly competitive fellowship.
Haley Akemi Briggles’s dissertation focuses on how East Asian American musicians of the past fifty years have used music to engage with the marginalization of Asian Americans in U.S. popular culture. As a pianist, Haley also enjoys performing and sharing music through her teaching. Her goal is a career in higher education administration, and she has mentored AAPI students and worked on grant writing projects that aim to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Humanities at Stony Brook.
